Extractions: NIH What Is Ulcerative Colitis (UC)? Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a condition that affects the large intestine - the rectum and colon. It may affect only a part of the large intestine, or the entire colon and rectum. Rarely, it may affect the last part of the small intestine, called the ileum. The affected part of the large intestine becomes inflamed and develops ulcers, causing symptoms that include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Inflammation is the body's response to irritation or injury. Inflammation causes tissues of the affected part of the body to become swollen, red, warm, and painful. It is not known exactly what causes the bowel to become inflamed. It is actually only the inner lining of the large bowel that is affected in ulcerative colitis. A similar condition, Crohn's disease, can cause inflammation in any portion of the gastrointestinal tract and can affect the full thickness of the bowel wall. Both conditions, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are known as inflammatory bowel disease. In ulcerative colitis, the inflammation usually starts at the rectum and ends at some point in the colon. The affected area is "continuous," that is, there is no area of normal tissue between the affected areas. The amount of colon involved determines the classification of the type of ulcerative colitis:

Extractions: In February of 1997 a chapter of my life started that would forever change the way I viewed my world and the health so many of us in life take for granted..I passed some blood while using the bathroom one day and as you would expect It scared me a little but I dismissed it as something bad I ate or some rawness down there..you know..nothing major..forget about it right We'll it started appearing more and more frequently however I never really felt bad other than the blood making me a little weak.. I passed it off as nothing and figured it was just a normal part of my movements now..Life goes on and ready for the next day...We'll I finally mentioned it to my wife and well she did not think it was so normal and urged me to make an appt with our family doc..so I did with much resistance..C'mon you know how us guys are with doctors and hospitals..Were invincible!! I went and saw our family P.A. who dismissed it as probably a innocent Roid and recomended I see a Colorectal Doctor to confirm this..Well after about another month of the symptoms now combined with some kind of mucus I finally did make that appt with a colorectal doc..Were up to April 97 now and still bleeding and also starting to take a toll on my health!! The Colon Rectal doc told me it was roids and performed three small banding procedures that hurt like hell to remove these supposed hemmies!! To this day I doubt he ever did do anything significant because guess what The bleeding and mucus got worse and now more symptoms began such as Severe cramping and Bloody Diareha. I started going 10,15,20 times a day and it was all blood..I got so weak that I could barely lift my head some days let alone get out of bed!!

Extractions: IBD is depressing, maddening and unfair, but it's real. We can't wish it away, so we have deal with it as best we can. Here I offer some things I've written over the years of living with Crohn's Disease . They're arranged in chronological order, so they're sort of a diary of coping and healing. Many deal specifically with IBD, but many deal with the stuff of life in general. Since I don't believe the body and mind and spirit function separately from one another, it all seems pertinent. The primary problem in IBD is inflammation, as the name suggests. Inflammation is a process that often occurs in order to fight off foreign invaders in the body, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi. In response to such organisms, the body's immune system begins to produce a variety of cells and chemicals intended to stop the invasion. These immune cells and chemicals, however, also have direct effects on the body's tissues, resulting in heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function. No one knows what starts the cycle of inflammation in IBD, but the result is a swollen, boggy intestine. In ulcerative colitis, the inflammation affects the lining of the rectum and large intestine. It is thought that the inflammation begins in the last segment of large intestine, which empties into the rectum (sigmoid colon). This inflammation may spread through the entire large intestine, but only rarely affects the very last section of the small intestine (ileum). The rest of the small intestine remains normal. Ulcerative colitis differs from Crohn's disease , which is a form of IBD that affects both the small and large intestines. The inflammation of ulcerative colitis occurs only in the lining of the intestine (unlike Crohn's disease which affects all of the layers of the intestinal wall). As the inflammation continues, the tissue of the intestine begins to slough off, leaving pits (ulcerations) which often become infected.

In my opinion the doctors will let you go on as long as you don't complain too much. Before World War II, people who had Ulcerative Colitis (UC) badly enough died, probably of peritonitis when their colon perforated, causing the bowel to spill into the abdominal cavity. The problems were inadequate surgical technique in joining the ileum to the stomach wall and primitive appliances failing to adequately seal the collecting device to the body. Surgeons refused to operate because the exteriorised bowel became inflamed, contracted and eventually obstructed. Collecting devices were useless and most people were allowed to perforate. The few who were operated on lived solitary lives (because of the odour) while many died, unable to cope with the complications in the area of the stoma. After the war, a new surgical technique was developed by Professor Bryan Brookes MD MChir FRCS Hon FRACS everted stoma (spout). By turning the ileum inside out, the inner mucosa surface was then the surface in contact with the effluent, and this method was so successful it was eventually used worldwide and is referred to as the "Brooke Eversion Technique". This new technique and rapid advances in materials technology, invariably saved peoples lives and undoubtedly gave sufferers an opportunity of a new life from the 1960s. For my Brooke

Ulcerative colitis is more common in Western societies, i.e. Australia, Europe and North America. More common in females than males. Usual age of onset 15-44 years of age (early and late peaks) Increased incidence in Jewish community Family history 10% The presentation depends on the severity of the disease. Compared to Crohn's disease, UC tends to be of more acute onset but many patients with mild disease (the commonest form of the disease 65%) may have had mild symptoms of frequent soft bowel motions and mild crampy abdominal pain for years. Distal Colon and rectum only are involved. Progression to remainder of the colon is uncommon (15%). The disease is often intermittent and consists of mild diarrhoea (3-5 / day) which may be associated with mild lower crampy abdominal pain. Patients are otherwise well and do not have constitutional symptoms. Physical Exam is normal. Extra-colonic manifestations are rare. The vast majority of patients with mild distal disease which can be managed medically and frequently run a long quiescent course managed effectively with sulphasalazine.
