Tourette Syndrome is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by repeated and involuntary body movements (tics) and uncontrollable vocal sounds. In a minority of cases, the vocalizations can include socially inappropriate words and phrases called coprolalia. These outbursts are neither intentional nor purposeful. Involuntary symptoms can included eye blinking, repeated throat clearing or sniffing, arm thrusting, kicking movements, shoulder shrugging or jumping. These and other symptoms typically appear before the age of 18 and the condition occurs in all ethnic groups with males affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. Although the symptoms of TS vary from person to person and range from very mild to severe, the majority of cases fall into the mild category. Associated conditions can include obsessivity, attentional problems and impulsiveness. Most people with TS lead productive lives and participate in all professions. Increased public understanding and tolerance of TS symptoms are of paramount importance to people with Tourette Syndrome.

Going forward, upon completion, this site will be dedicated to the education and help to those affected with T.S. Thanks to modern medical technology, the doctors have pinpointed the exact date I contracted T.S. 10-23-1967. the day I was born. It is hereditary passed on through generations affecting some and skipping others. Some people inherit the family fortune, I got T.S. Actually I am relieved, I can now put a name to the problems I've had all my life. About 4 or 5 out of every 10,000 people in the world have T.S.There are two types of tics. Motor and vocal. Most people with TS suffer from both to some extent. Most of my tics are in my arms, neck and head. Motor tics are involuntary movements of the body, and vocal tics can be a wide range of vocal sounds, from barking to swearing, whistling, screaming, saying the same word or phrase repeatedly. None of us want this, but we have it, and we have to live with it. There are many medications for this. some with severe side affects. I have tried a couple of medication with little help. I have decided not to continue medications. Although medication didn't help me, others are having great success with the medications.

Tics are involuntary twitch-like movements involving groups of muscles. In this syndrome, tics characteristically involve the facial area (e.g. blinking, grimacing, nodding) as well as phonic (vocal) tics, although any area can be involved. The tics range from very simple to more complex, purposeful movements. Vocal tics can be as simple as throat clearing or coughing. Tics can be suppressed for a short time and so, for example, the condition may appear different at school compared to home. The onset of the symptoms is usually between the ages of 5-11 with a maximum starting age of 21. There is a very wide range of severity so that many people with the condition may never need to seek medical attention whilst others have a socially disabling condition. In some cases echolalia (the repetition of phrases, or mimicking of gestures) may be present.      Extractions: My Experience In September of 1996 my son was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. At that time, he was six years old. For a little over two years he had been doing things that I didn't understand. He would yell and scream while moving his neck in a shaking type of movement. He would have fits where he was just totally uncontrollable, I mean extremely upset. He couldn't sit still in chairs, he had to bounce up and down. He really couldn't sit still at all. He would spit constantly. He would repeat things over and over again. And if he became sick, these things were 100 times worse. I finally made the decision to take him to a Pediatric Neurologist. That day was a day I will never forget. The doctor told me that my son had Tourette Syndrome. I was in shock. I couldn't believe that my child had something, that at that time, I knew absolutely nothing about. Something I had no control over whatsoever. It took probably two months before I finally realized that Tourettes was not caused by me and the only person whose feelings really mattered was my sons. When I came to grip with that fact I began to research Tourettes. I found a lot of interesting information and sat down and shared it with my son.

     Extractions: October 2002 Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder resulting from a chemical imbalance in the brain. There is currently no medical test that will clinically diagnose TS.  It is therefore diagnosed by the presence of four very observable diagnostic criteria which I will list and expand upon in this article.  These diagnostic criteria are as follows: Multiple motor tics Vocal tics Waxing and waning of symptoms Childhood onset of symptoms Motor tics: A vocal tic can be defined as the repeated uttering of a sound, word or phrase.  Vocal tics can be as simple as a constant sniffing or throat clearing.  It could be a squeak, a snort, a howl, a bark or a word or phrase that is repeated over and over.  A boy diagnosed with TS whom I currently teach makes a series of snorts and animal sounds.  He also repeats phrases such as “chickens are fuzzy, chickens are fuzzy” and “I have a chicken in my pants.”  Unfortunately, anyone who knows anything about TS knows of the vocal tic that takes the form of inappropriate language.  This is known as coprolalia.  It does exist and can certainly be a part of Tourette, but is not necessary for a diagnosis.  It actually occurs very infrequently with people with TS.  It usually takes the form of curse words, but could be anything inappropriate such as ethnic slurs or comments on a person’s appearance, such as “you’re bald, you’re fat.”  My student’s “I have a chicken in my pants” could be classified as coprolalia.  In my classroom where we all understand Tourette, it is simply ignored.  In the real world, this certainly would not be the case.

     Extractions: If you really want to know the neuropathology of Tourette Syndrome, chances are, you will not be satisfied with the available literature. All they can really tell you is that it remains a mystery, and that most research done to this point in time can only reveal correlational and not causal particularities. The history of Tourette Syndrome research is quite predictable. As is the case with many socially disruptive neural disorders, the first studies concentrated on psychological factors, as in hysterias or choreas. Psychoanalytic analyses of character and obsessive compulsive neurosis followed, and only when a neurotransmitter blocking drug- haliperidol- was found to affect tics, did the attention shift to neurophysiology. In recent years, the data has consistently implicated the basal ganglia, both in neurochemical dysfunction and in morphological abnormalities. Other regions that could play a role are the corpus collosum and anterior cingulate cortex. Dopaminergic systems are suspected as well. Following is a summary of available research data. The basal ganglia is a dense region of five nuclei located beneath the cortex. Postmortem studies of the basal ganglia of individuals with Parkinson's and Huntington's revealed its role in the control of movement, and it also has ties to regions of cognitive function (Kandel et al, 1991). Decreased utilization of glucose and decreased regional blood flow has been observed in the basal ganglia of patients with Tourette's Syndrome (Chappell et al, 1992). One postulates that the decreased function of the basal ganglia may reflect decreased inhibitory activity on behavior.
