Contemplating Suicide? If you are contemplating suicide you probably think I don t understand. Okay let s look at that. Do you think you are the only one who is thinking of suicide? http://www.behindthebadge.net/suicide/
Extractions: While I was on the Sheriff's Department I saw and investigated a lot of suicides. Every one of them was a tragedy. Each person I saw had the potential to give something to this world. Each person I saw had made a decision that could not be changed; it was final. I never investigated a suicide and found that the person had a problem or problems that was totally different then the problems that many other people also face. Most importantly I never investigated a suicide where there was a problem too horrible or too bad that one act would not have taken care of it. That act would have been to lay that problem at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ. There is no sin (and that is what most problems are or at least start as) that Jesus cannot forgive and help the person deal with. If you are contemplating suicide you probably think I don't understand. Okay let's look at that. While I was a Police Officer the law enforcement profession had the highest suicide rate of any profession. It was the second highest profession as far as alcoholism. Police Officers are under stress every day. You may not like them, you may not think that they have a hard job, but think about this. If they think someone has a gun and is about to try to hurt them, they have mere seconds to make a decision on what to do. Do they take this person's life or risk being killed themselves? If they decide to take the life and then find out that the person did not have a weapon, they will be judged by people who have never been in that situation and who have all the facts and plenty of time to make their decision. If they don't take the person's life and that person does have a weapon and the will to use it, they may very well be the next name listed on my Police Memorial page.

JERUSALEM (CNN) Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon blamed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Monday for three weekend suicide bombings and subsequent Israeli air raids on Palestinian targets, saying "a war of terrorism" had been imposed on his country. "Arafat is responsible for everything that is happening here," Sharon said in a televised address following Israeli airstrikes against targets in the West Bank and Gaza, including the headquarters of Arafat's guard units. The strikes were a response to the suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Haifa over the weekend that killed 25 Israelis and three suicide bombers. Sharon said the purpose of terrorists and their backers was to "make us desperate, to make us lose hope, to make us lose the national vision that leads us."

Extra-social Causes Social Causes and Social Types Egoistic Suicide ... Critical Remarks What is Suicide? Explanation requires comparison; comparison requires classification; classification requires the definition of those facts to be classified, compared, and ultimately explained. Consistent with The Rules of Sociological Method , therefore, Durkheim began his 1897 work with a warning against notiones vulgares , together with an insistence that our first task... must be to determine the order of facts to be studied under the name of suicide... we must inquire whether, among the different varieties of death, some have common qualities objective enough to be recognized by all honest observers, specific enough not to be found elsewhere and also sufficiently kin to those commonly called suicides for us to retain the same term without breaking with common usage. Durkheim's initial effort at such a definition indeed followed common usage, according to which a "suicide" is any death which is the immediate or eventual result of a positive (e.g., shooting oneself) or negative (e.g., refusing to eat) act accomplished by the victim himself.
Extractions: Index Death The three categories dealt with are the causes of death, coping with death, and the afterlife. This web site is very interesting because each category is broken down into the social sciences, philosophy, science, and art and literature. Interviews with those who deal with death on a daily basis offer an unusual look at this subject. Even though the topic of death can be a "downer," this is an excellent and uplifting web site. Already a concern, the alert has been heightened after Iranian gunboats on Wednesday intercepted an Iraqi speedboat packed with half a tonne of explosives. Three other Iraqi speedboats, which may contain similar amounts of explosive, got away when Iranian forces engaged Iraqis at the mouth of the Shatt-al-Arab river, according to a report by a journalist aboard Australian navy ship HMAS Kanimbla. The explosives were discovered after one of the Iraqi boats was run aground during the confrontation, the report said. The head of Australia's navy, Vice-Admiral Chris Ritchie, told a media briefing in Canberra Thursday that the military were taking the jetboat threat seriously. In recent days Australian and British navy divers have been clearing mines from sea lanes around the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr, opening the way for humanitarian aid shipments

At least 115 others were injured, 10 of them seriously, 22 moderately and 54 lightly, according to hospital sources. Israeli television reported a caller claimed responsibility on behalf of the militant Muslim group Islamic Jihad and claimed to be a member of the group. Israeli officials, however, blamed Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat for inciting Palestinian hostility toward Israel. A spokesman in the office of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat released the following statement reacting to the suicide bombing: "We condemn these attacks against civilians and call on all to practice restraint, stop escalation, end the military siege, end all forms of violence and go back to the negotiating table with emphasis on the basis of the Egyptian-Jordanian proposal and the Mitchell report. We call for a stop of all kinds of violence against civilians for our children's and their children's sake."
