Extractions: SPINE DISORDERS There are an unlimited number of back and neck diagnoses that the physicians at Long Island Spine Specialists treat on a daily basis. Here are some of the more common ones. Compression fracture : A spinal fracture resulting from compression of the vertebra. Compression fractures can occur in any area of the spine. Degenerative Disc Disease : A normal wear-and-tear process of the spine that occurs after multiple annular tears have developed, resulting in the nucleus pulposus losing the ability to function as a shock absorber. Herniated Disc : Herniated Disc is also referred to as herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP), disc rupture, or disc prolapse. The disc consists of a tough outer layer (the annulus fibrosus) and a gel-like center (the nucleus pulposus). With age the center of the disc may start to lose water content, making the disc less effective as a cushion, possibly causing displacement of the discs center (called a herniated or ruptured disc) through a crack in the outer layer. Nerve Compression : A pathologic condition that causes pressure on nerves, resulting in possible nerve damage and muscle weakness or atrophy.

Extractions: This book is an excellent reference source for the evaluation and treatment of the spine, pelvis and TMJ using both manual techniques and exercise. The book has informational chapters on each of the aforementioned joints, as well as the vertebral artery, the scanning examination, and the subjective examination. The text is extensively referenced, and there are numerous case studies, that challenge the reader to test their differential diagnostic skills. There are also a lot of review question... I bought this book while in school, and found it to be the best resource for most of my core classes. It covers EVERYTHING about the practice of Chiropractic...radiology (positioning and analysis), examination, adjusting (different techniques are covered). A MUST have for ANY medical library. A CORE peice for EVERY Chiropractic library.

Back pain is the second most common reason for physician visits, and back surgery is the third most common surgery performed in the United States. Spine disease includes: degenerative arthritis, spinal stenosis, herniated or degenerative disc disease, instability due to arthritis, trauma, scoliosis, or spina bifida, osteoporosis, fractures, and spinal cord tumors. Neurosurgeons are instrumental in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders, and in fact, over two-thirds of all surgeries performed by neurosurgeons are for spine disease. Treatment of spinal disorders requires a multidisciplinary approach involving your family physician, physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, accupuncturists, pain management specialists, and surgeons. At the University of Virginia, we collaborate with all these health care providers to provide comprehensive care for patients with back and neck pain. With this approach, surgery is often avoided. However, if pain persists despite extensive non-surgical treatment, or if surgery is the most appropriate first option (such as in spine tumors or some fractures), we have nationally recognized spine surgeons well-versed in all current techniques and aided by a top-flight nursing staff to successfully treat all spinal disorders.

The Neurosurgery department provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients suffering from arthritic, degenerative, traumatic, congenital, infectious, and neoplastic disorders of the spinal vertebra, spinal cord and spinal nerves. Multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of complex neurospinal disorders is provided by a multidisciplinary team, which includes surgeons, neurologist, physiatrist, rheumatologist, orthopedist, anesthesiologist, and physiotherapist. Overall treatment goals are pain relief, prevention of paralysis, and restoration of functional capacity. Reduction of spinal deformities, decompression of neural structures, and reconstruction of incompetent vertebral structures using spinal instrumentation to archieve fusion of unstable spinal joints (arthrodesis) are among the goals of spinal surgery. The latest surgical techniques, including minimally invasive arthroscopic and endoscopic techniques, are used. Computer-assisted, image-guided, frameless stereotactic surgical systems are employed regularly to achieve new standards of accuracy during spinal decompression and instrumentation procedures. Spinal nerve and cord function is monitored routinely during surgery to prevent injury to vital neurological structures.

Extractions: The most common spine disorder is the degenerative condition of cervical and lumbar spondylosis, whereby the discs, bony protrusions and hypertrophied ligaments press on the nerve roots and spinal cord to cause pain, numbness, weakness and at times difficulty in walking. Treatment The majority of such condition can be treated with physical therapy and medications. However, those with spinal cord compression and neurological deficit, i.e. difficulty in walking, will require surgery. Sometimes congenital disorders like chiari malformation with syringomyelia, where fluid circulating in the spinal cord is blocked, cause symptoms of numbness, weakness and loss of heat sensation. This condition may also improve with treatment. Neuro-Spine Programme Acute trauma with spinal injury is serious and often cause paralysis. The neuro-spine programme manages such patients in an acute spine injury unit in collaboration with the TTSH Spine Programme, whereby surgeons, therapists, nurses and rehabilitation physicians work together.
