Helping son Dear Helping son, Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as irritable or spastic colon, mucus colitis, or nervous bowel, is a the nation's current #1 stomach disorder. It is characterized by a disruption of the normal pattern of muscular contractions that move waste through the intestines. The result is either diarrhea or constipation or alternating bouts of both. Other symptoms include abdominal pain or swelling, feelings of excessive fullness, gas, painful bowel movements, indigestion, heartburn, and nausea. Since these symptoms can occur with other disorders, diagnosis by a physician is important. Irritable bowel syndrome usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, and affects twice as many women as men.
