Shingles is a localized infection due to the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It occurs only in people who have had chickenpox in the past and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella virus. Why the virus reactivates in some individuals and not in others is unknown. Who gets shingles? The disease is primarily seen in the elderly, but occasionally it occurs in younger individuals. It affects both sexes and all races with equal frequency and occurs sporadically throughout the year. How is shingles spread? A person must have already had chickenpox in the past to develop shingles. Contact with an infected individual does not cause another person's dormant virus to reactivate. However, the virus from a shingles patient may cause chickenpox in someone who has not had it before. What are the symptoms of shingles? The first sign is often a tingling feeling on the skin, itchiness or a stabbing pain. After several days, a rash appears beginning as a band or patch of raised dots on the side of the trunk or face. It then develops into small, fluid-filled blisters which begin to dry out and crust over within a few days. When the rash is at its peak, symptoms can range from mild itching to extreme and intense pain. The rash and pain usually disappear within three to five weeks.

Famciclovir reduces the severity of outbreaks and prevents the development of new blisters. Famciclovir has also been shown to be effective for preventing genital herpes outbreaks. Managing side effects For shingles the recommended dosage is 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. For genital herpes simplex infections, the recommended dose is 125 mg twice a day for 5 days. The dosage used to prevent genital herpes outbreaks is 500 mg twice a day. In people with reduced kidney function, the dosage should be reduced. The amount of dose reduction is dependent on how well the kidney is functioning. How long it may take to work

After an individual has chickenpox, this virus lives in the nerves and is never fully cleared from the body. Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress , immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy ) or with cancer , the virus re- activates causing shingles. In most cases, however, a cause for the reactivation of the virus is never found. The herpes virus that causes shingles and chicken pox is not the same as the herpes virus that causes genital herpes (which can be sexually transmitted) and herpes mouth sores.
