Extractions: SHIGELLOSIS What is shigellosis? Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella . Most people who are infected with Shigella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps a day or two after being exposed to the bacterium. The diarrhea is often bloody. Shigellosis usually resolves in five to seven days. In some persons, especially young children and the elderly, the diarrhea can be so severe the patient needs to be hospitalized. A severe infection with high fever also may be associated with seizures in children younger than 2 years of age. Some persons who are infected may have no symptoms at all, but may still pass the Shigella bacteria to others. What sort of germ is Shigella The Shigella germ is actually a family of bacteria that can cause diarrhea in humans. These microscopic living creatures, which can pass from person to person, were discovered 100 years ago by a Japanese scientist named Shiga, for whom they are named. There are several kinds of Shigella bacteria but only two are common in the United States.

Extractions: SHIGELLOSIS Shigellosis , or Shigella , is a common infection caused by a bacteria. Since it is contagious, it can be passed from person to person. It often spreads among family members, especially children. Sometimes a large outbreak can occur with many people getting sick within a short time. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Diarrhea which may look bloody. Sometimes, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting may occur. HOW DO YOU GET SHIGELLA? The germs leave the infected person in the feces (bowel movement). The germs must then get into another person's mouth and be swallowed to make him or her sick. This happens when people do not wash their hands well after a bowel movement and then fix food. Children get their bowel movement on toys which other children put in their mouths. Parents, daycare workers, or babysitters do not wash their own hands well after changing diapers or potty-training. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET SICK?
