People with PIDD are unable to fight off bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi and malignant cells, which can lead to frequent infections that are difficult to fight and to an increased incidence of cancer. The condition can go undetected because the symptoms appear as "ordinary" infections of the sinuses, ears, or lungs, or as gastrointestinal problems or inflammation of the joints. As a result, families and physicians are often unaware that the troubling conditions they see in the child are actually caused by an underlying defect of the immune system. It represents her family's experiences of living with chronic illness over a period of thirty seven years, and her interaction with other parents of children with primary immune deficiency as well as adult patients. She addresses the emotional side effects of this disorder, and includes experiences of other parents of pediatric primary immune deficiency patients and adult patients who kindly offered suggestions from their personal experiences. In addition, there are quotes from other publications that focus on living with chronic illness. It is our hope that this booklet will help you be better prepared for what you may encounter, and that it offers practical suggestions for coping with typical daily challenges. In addition, it may help you maintain a more stable management of your loved one's health, as well as maintain your family's stability while living with chronic illness. It is encouraging to know that cures are being found for some of these disorders.

Extractions: Primary Immune Deficiency Disorders The Clinical Immunology Society's 2004 Summer School in Primary Immune Deficiency Disorders will be held September 29-October 3, 2004 in the Southeastern USA. The target audience for the Summer School is fellows in training within their last years of fellowship training and must hold an MD or equivalent. These individuals should be pediatricians or internists, or scientists committed to the management of patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases. These individuals may have a background in immunology, transplantation, infectious diseases, internal medicine, rheumatology, hematology, laboratory immunology, or allergy/immunology. By the end of this Summer School, participants should be able to: better diagnose and treat primary immune deficiency diseases; have a more enhanced awareness of these genetic defects and their importance in scientific discoveries and future clinical applications; create future collaborations between themselves and experienced clinician scientists in the field; different medical centers and countries. The Summer School will achieve these objectives through intensive, daily lectures and discussions among faculty and fellows, case study presentations and periodic testing of application knowledge. Portions of each session will be devoted to the basic sciences behind the study of these defects. Topics to be covered may include: SCID, transplantation, defects of B cells, Hyper IgM syndrome, neutrophil disorders, cytokine receptor defects, Di George syndrome, new defects, IPEX and how to approach the evaluation of unknown cases.

Extractions: Primary immune deficiencies are inborn genetic defects in the immune system. It is estimated that at least half a million people worldwide suffer from at least one of these disorders. These patients suffer from recurrent and persistent infections. Gene therapy offers the promise of a potential cure, obliterating the need for antibiotic and immunoglobulin therapy and bone marrow transplants. Prompt administration of antibiotics at the first signs of infection is vital and those with deficient antibody levels require monthly immunogobulin infusions. Bone marrow transplantation has provided complete remission to some suffering from very severe conditions, such as severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), but global success rates over the past thirty years are only between 60-70%. Gene therapy is beginning to show some promise as a viable treatment alternative. The obvious benefit in curing these debilitating illnesses will have to be balanced with the potential risks posed by this new form of treatment. Although entry into the commercial arena is not expected for another few years, the market and growth for gene therapy products will be unprecedented, since application of this technology will have far-reaching implications for a number of other clinical conditions.

Immune-mediated Thrombocytopenia The diagnosis of primary IMT is made if no causes of secondary IMT can be found, which canine distemper), or other immunemediated disorders such as http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/immune disorders/immune-mediated thrombocytope
Extractions: What is immune-mediated thrombocytopenia? Thrombocytopenia means a reduction in platelets (thrombocytes). Platelets (one of the cell types in the blood) play an important role in the clotting process; thus the main result of a decrease in platelets is increased bleeding - for example, nosebleeds. In immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT), the reduction happens because there is increased destruction of platelets by the body's own immune system, at a rate faster than they are produced in the bone marrow. IMT may be secondary to some other process (such as an infection, tumour, or drug reaction) or it may be primary, meaning that no other causative factor can be found. It is more common in certain breeds, suggesting there is an inherited component. IMT may occur by itself or with other conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus and autoimmune hemolytic anemia How is immune-mediated thrombocytopenia inherited? unknown. However it is more common in certain breeds, which suggests that there is an inherited component. What Is Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) ? other medical disorders associated with their PID that also create symptoms, ie asthma, autoimmune, and gastrointestinal complaints. Though the primary immune http://www.pidsnz.co.nz/news/2000/spring/whatpid.htm
Extractions: The immune system is the body's defence mechanism that prevents infections from invading a person's body. When a person has primary immunodeficiency, one or more of the four parts of the immune system (B-lymphocyte, T-lymphocyte, Phagocyte, and Complement are missing or not functioning properly. Thus, the body is more vulnerable to becoming ill because the immune system is unable to fight off infections. Individuals may develop PID at any stage in their life. Patients with PID may suffer from more severe illnesses than normal, but they more commonly suffer from chronic and or frequent recurrences of a particular illness and longer duration of the illness due to the weaker immune system. Children may have other medical disorders associated with their PID that also create symptoms, i.e. asthma, autoimmune, and gastrointestinal complaints. Though the primary immune deficiency diseases can be serious they are rarely fatal and can generally, be controlled.
