Extractions: Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It is a fairly common condition and usually causes no danger to the eye or your child's vision . The inflammation can have many causes, the most common of which are infectious, allergic, and irritant. Infectious conjunctivitis is usually caused by either bacteria or viruses. Many different bacteria can cause conjunctivitis but the most common are Streptococcus pneumoniae Haemophilus influenzae , and Staphylococcus aureus . The organisms that cause the sexually transmitted diseases gonorrhea and chlamydia can also infect the eyes and cause conjunctivitis. This type of eye infection can occur in sexually active people and in newborns who acquire the infection at birth from their mothers. Viral conjunctivitis is common with several viral infections - most often with infections caused by adenoviruses or enteroviruses - and can occur during a common cold or the flu . A less common but more serious viral conjunctivitis is herpes simplex infection. Parasites and fungal infections are rare causes of conjunctivitis.

Extractions: by American Academy of Pediatrics Advertisement Pinkeye, also called conjunctivitis, can be caused by bacterial or viral infections or by allergic reactions to dust, pollen, and other materials. Bacterial and viral infections usually produce a white or yellowish pus that may cause the eyelids to stick shut in the morning. The discharge in allergic conjunctivitis is often clear and watery. All types involve redness and burning or itching eyes. Pinkeye in child care settings is most often due to bacterial or viral infections. It can usually be treated with antibiotics. Red and sore eyes may be part of viral respiratory infections, including measles. The germs that cause conjunctivitis may be present in nasal secretions, as well as in the discharge from the eyes. Persons can become infected when their hands become contaminated with these materials and they rub their eyes. Eyes can also become infected when a person uses contaminated towels or eye makeup. If a child in your facility develops pinkeye: Contact the child's parents and ask them to have the child seen by the doctor. Eye injuries and foreign bodies in the eye can cause similar symptoms.

Extractions: The conjunctiva lines the inside of the eyelids, extends into the space between the eyelid and the eyeball, and covers part of the "white" of the eyeball. Pinkeye is the descriptive term used when the conjunctiva gets inflamed and the eyes appear red or pink (conjunctivitis). It is common. Sometimes pinkeye clears up with simple improvement in hygienic practices, but often it requires medical treatment. Causes/Symptoms of PINKEYE Allergies: Some people are allergic to items in the environment. These could be, for example, pollen, grasses, dust, pet dander, smoke. Exposure to the irritant can cause the eyes to become inflamed, watery, and itchy. Usually this inflammation clears up readily upon removal of the irritant. Viral Infection: If the eyes are infected with a virus, they often appear inflamed, have somewhat swollen lids, feel tender, and have a watery discharge. Bacterial Infection: Besides the inflammation, a bacterial infection usually causes the eyes to burn or hurt and the lids to swell. The eyes often get a white or yellowish drainage & are often "crusty" (dried drainage) when waking up in the morning.

Extractions: CALIFORNIA CATTLEMAN, MAY 2002 PINKEYE THERAPY Last month we discussed fly control methods. One of the important aspects of fly control is decreasing face fly infestations as a method of helping to prevent pinkeye in cattle. Another aid in the prevention of pinkeye is to clip the pastures if grass is too long and headed out. The irritation of dust, plant pollen, or weed seeds will promote the heavy shedding of the pinkeye bacteria ( Moraxella bovis These carriers spread the organism by contact and face flies to the rest of the herd and the susceptible animals will become infected and have clinical pinkeye. Dr. Lisle George has examined several methods to treat pinkeye and these and other methods are summarized below. You can obtain these from your veterinarian or other animal health product source. If pinkeye vaccines are part of your prevention plan, vaccinate well ahead of pinkeye season. Try to give the last dose of vaccine 30 days before the fly season. If the vaccine is a two-dose product, give two doses. Be sure to vaccinate the calves, as they are often the ones most at risk. If pinkeye cases do occur, what is the best treatment?
