Extractions: Catel-Manzke Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by abnormalities of the fingers and the classic physical characteristics associated with Pierre Robin Syndrome (i.e., an abnormally small jaw [micrognathia], incomplete closure of the roof of the mouth [cleft palate], and displacement of the tongue farther back in the mouth than usual [glossoptosis]). In all reported cases, affected infants have had an extra (supernumerary), irregularly-shaped bone located where the first bones of the index and middle fingers (proximal phalanges) connect with the corresponding bones of the palms (metacarpals). As a result, the index fingers may be fixed in an abnormally bent position (clinodactyly).

Extractions: by Alana Poos A great aid to coping with a birth defect is simply knowing what it is. While there might be a great deal of information on cleft lip and/or palate, there simply isn't an abundance of information readily available to parents of children with cleft-related birth defects, especially those that are considered rare. The following information has been obtained from a number of sources, and will hopefully help to clarify exactly what Pierre-Robin Sequence is. WHAT IS PIERRE ROBIN SEQUENCE? Pierre Robin Sequence is the name given to a birth defect that involves an abnormally small lower jaw, and a tendency for the tongue to "ball up" and fall backward toward the throat. Babies born with this condition may or may not have a cleft palate, but they do not have a cleft lip. The condition of Pierre Robin Sequence was first described in 1822 and was named after the French physician who associated the above symptoms with breathing problems in affected infants. The current complete name is "Pierre Robin Malformation Sequence", but it can also be known as "Cleft Palate, Micrognathia, and Glossoptosis", "Robin Anomalad", "Pierre Robin Complex", and "Pierre Robin Syndrome".

Extractions: CLEFT PALATES/PIERRE ROBIN SEQUENCE in t(11;22) (the information contained here is obtained from personal contact with families and case studies. Any information pertaining to my daughter's case may not be reflected in other cases, in every instance please consult your own health professionals for proper advice. Information contained here is for educational purposes only) Cleft palates are common among children with unbalanced 11/22 translocation. (approximately 50% of cases) This is where the palate (the roof of the mouth) does not form and basically there is a hole in the roof of the child's mouth. Within our group, Pierre Robin Sequence has sometimes been a first diagnosis of an affected child, and later genetic testing confirms the t(11;22) . PRS is associated in many other genetic disorders, or can be found independent of any genetic causes. My daughter had a cleft palate in combination with Pierre Robin Sequence (Also known as Robin Sequence or Pierre Robin Syndrome, though it actually not really a syndrome, but a sequence) and was her only inital diagnosis until 2 1/2 months of age when genetic testing found t(11;22). Pierre Robin Sequence is diagnosed in children when there are findings of a cleft palate, an underdeveloped jaw (micrognathia) and a tendency for the tongue to fall towards the back of the throat causing feeding and breathing difficulties, and apnea. Surgery to repair the cleft is usually done at around a year or so of age. Sometimes the children's breathing is severe enough to require intubation or tracheostomy. Usually as a child develops, the receded chin will become less noticable, and the airway will grow along with the child
