Extractions: Panacur, antiparasitic drugs, and symptoms of parasite infection You are visitor: Since April, 7th, 1996 In recent discussions on the Water Dragon Mailing list, I've seen several subscribers asking questions about the drugs used to treat parasites. I thought I would tell you a little bit more about the drugs the vets commonly prescribe. There are several drugs that are frequently used to treat parasitic infections in reptiles and amphibians. I have only listed and discussed the most commonly used medication. The first two being used most often, and quite effectively. PANACUR (Febendazole): Dosage Effective Against: 50-100 mg/kg by mouth once, repeated in 2 weeks Nematodes 100 mg/kg by mouth every 48 hours X 3, repeat in three weeks ascarids in box turtles There are no neurological or other toxic effects listed in Mader's Reptile Medicine and Surgery, although I imagine there are some adverse effects to this drug, especially if overdosed. In general this drug is considered to be fairly safe and is used widely. It was developed for use in horses. Do note that it is mainly effective against Nematodes. FLAGYL (Metronidazole): Dosage Effective Against: 250 mg/kg by mouth once, repeat in two weeks

Parasites Signs of parasitic infection can easily be confused with a wide variety of other abdominal and intestinal diseases. There is a parasite connection to many common health problems experienced by children and adults in North America. Parasites compete with the digestive system for nutrients including vitamins Minerals and amino acids . They also secrete waste products into the gut and bloodstream that are capable of causing various allergic and autoimmune reactions. Usually, parasites that enter through the digestive tract cause appetite changes, stomach and abdominal discomfort, cramping and changes in stool, and diarrhea Malabsorption syndrome and other chronic digestive problems can occur from parasitic infections left undetected. Giardiasis is the most common parasitic infection of the small intestine. The small parasite Giardia lamblia exists in many North American rivers, as well as throughout the rest of the world. Symptoms range from mild stomach upsets to abdominal cramps and recurring bouts of nausea , gas and diarrhea. Stools typically become bulky and smelly.

Extractions: Brian A. Smith, DC Parasitic infection is usually a sign of an underlying, larger problem. In the HIV+ individual it is the inability of the body to successfully repel or prevent infection because of immunological dysfunction. SYMPTOMS OF INFECTION Parasitic infections may show a baffling array of symptoms, most of which are related to the gastrointestinal tract. The most commonly reported complaints are periods of diarrhea, alternating with periods of constipation. This may be accompanied by bloating, nausea, loss of appetite and other signs of an irritated bowel. Other symptoms not related to the intestinal tract may include night sweats, low tolerance to exercise, intermittent low-grade fevers, recurrent sore throats, low energy, more "allergic" type reactions and possibly behavioral changes. WHAT CAUSES THE INFECTION? Causative agents include the well-known "amoeba," which is actually a class of parasites including entamoeba histolytica, the most common, and endolimax nana, which is frequently observed. The "flagellate" class includes giardia lamblia and trichomonas hominis. Other causative agents include blastocystis hominis, microsporidium and cryptosporidiosis .html">cryptosporidium There are three main routes of infection. The most startling is drinking contaminated water. In the US, giardia is very prevalent in our water supply. Travelling to certain parts of the world may expose one to greater amounts of parasites than our body is able to handle. Did you ever wonder why the people living in these areas don't get infected? Their body has developed the strength necessary to prevent it! The third way is by exposure in restaurants where food handlers may be carriers.
Extractions: Background The design and development of school health programmes will require information at demographic characteristics of schoolchildren and the major health burdens of the school-age group, the opportunities for intervention and the appropriateness of the available infrastructure. This study aims to analyse demographic and parasitic infections status of schoolchildren and sanitary conditions of schools in Sanliurfa province of south-eastern Turkey. Method Results The demographic survey showed that number of schoolchildren was gradually decreased as their age's increase in shantytown school. The sex ratio was proportional until the second grade, after which the number of females gradually decreased in children in shantytown and rural schools while, in apartment area, schoolchildren was proportionally distributed between age groups and gender even the high-grade students. The prevalence of helminthic infections was %77.1 of the schoolchildren in shantytown, 53.2% in apartment district and 53.1% of rural area.
Extractions: Background One of the major health problems among HIV seropositive patients is superimposed infection due to the defect of immunity. Furthermore, intestinal parasite infection, which is also one of the basic health problems in tropical region, is common in these patients. In this study, a cross sectional study to document the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection in Thai HIV-infected patients with different immune status was performed. Methods A study of stool samples from 60 Thai HIV-infected patients with different immune status was performed at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thailand. Each patient was examined for CD4 count and screened for diarrheal symptoms.

Such investigations are considerably more common in most third world countries where endemic parasitosis are more readily documented. Table 1. Drug Discovery Parasitic Infections in Humans Parasitic Infections in Humans In many tropical and subtropical areas, the prevalence of parasitic infections is on the rise due to rapid and unplanned growth of cities, which creates additional breeding sites for the mosquitoes that transmit the parasites responsible for malaria and filariasis. Effective control of these diseases requires repeated administration of potent drugs and continuous efforts to reduce vector insect populations. Malaria is probably the most prevalent and debilitating parasitic disease afflicting humans. It is normally caused by one of four species of Plasmodium . Infection with Entamoeba histolytica , resulting in amoebic colitis and liver abscesses, is the second leading cause of death resulting from a parasitic infection. E. histolytica Filariasis is caused by several different species of parasitic nematodes that are transmitted to humans by a variety of insect vectors. Collectively, the various species of filarial parasites are estimated to infect approximately 150 million people worldwide, and over 1 billion people live in areas where filariasis is common (WHO [2000] Fact Sheets 102, 95). While filarial infection is rarely life-threatening, it causes chronic suffering, social stigma and disability. The degree of disability resulting from infection greatly hinders the ability to work and the economic impact of this disease is considerable.

To date, the safety and effectiveness of Alinia has not been established in HIV positive or immunodeficient patients. Alinia is the first drug product approved specifically for treatment of cryptosporidiosis and the only drug approved for treatment of giardiasis in this age group that would be available in suspension. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention some 4000 patients in the United States are infected by cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidiosis is an illness caused by the protozoan Cryptosporidium parvum and characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, nausea and vomiting. Infected persons may be asymptomatic, experience acute diarrhea, or be ill with persistent diarrhea that may continue for several weeks.

They are dependent on their hosts because they are unable to produce food or energy for themselves. Parasites are harmful to humans because they consume needed food, eat away body tissues and cells, and eliminate toxic waste, which makes people sick. Because of sanitary living conditions in America, parasites do not cause widespread life-threatening infections . In other parts of the world, however, parasitic infections are epidemic. They kill and disable millions of people every year. Parasitic infection cases in the United States are on the rise due to increased travel to and from underdeveloped countries. In addition, parasitic infections can cause severe infections in AIDS patients and other patients with weakened immune systems.
