Extractions: As pointed out by Walsh and Hoyt, "at the root of the problem has been a lack of strict criteria for the clinical diagnosis of ophthalmoplegic migraine and insufficient knowledge of the pathophysiologic events that occur during a migraine attack." Walsh and O'Doherty presented specific criteria for the diagnosis of the syndrome:

Extractions: What are eye migraines? What are commonly called eye migraines are actually a group of different types of migraine, including ocular migraines (or occular), ophthalmic migraines, a type of silent or acephalgic migraine, and even ophthalmoplegic migraines. Confused? Don't worry, you'll see it all clearly in a moment (oops, sorry!)... First, you need to remember that pain is only one possible symptom of migraine see the article on symptoms ). Other symptoms include nausea, congestion, and visual symptoms. Silent migraine or acephalgic migraine is migraine without the headache. Eye migraines silent migraine: If this is you, you may be getting strange visual disturbances, usually lasting less than an hour, but no headache. This is quite possibly a type of migraine, and needs to be treated in basically the same way as any other type of migraine. However, you do need to make sure you see a good doctor so that she can rule out other problems that can do permanent damage. Eye migraines Occular migraines: Ocular or retinal migraines are quite rare. You get partial (retinal) or complete (ocular) blindness, usually in just one eye. This disturbance lasts less than an hour. The headache (often a dull ache behind the affected eye) usually happens afterwards, but can happen before or even during (our bodies are so unpredictable!). This type of migraine varies with which artery is being hit.

Extractions: Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC 20010, USA. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ophthalmoplegic migraine is a rare condition characterized by the association of headaches and an oculomotor nerve palsy. We report six patients with typical clinical features of this disorder in whom enhancement of the cisternal segment of the oculomotor nerve developed during the acute phase, followed by resolution of enhancement over several weeks as the symptoms resolved. METHODS: Six

Migraine variants (MVs) generally are paroxysmal disorders, which include either headache as a prominent feature among a collection of symptoms or occurrence in individuals who have a personal or family history of migraine. MVs occur more frequently in children and adolescents than in adults; they may precede the development of more typical migraines in adulthood. MVs are less recognized, less understood, and far less common than migraines; consequently, little population-based data are available describing the incidence or prevalence of MVs. Few randomized, controlled trials exist that describe efficacious treatments for these unusual entities. Recognition of MV is important, since many respond to typical antimigraine medications. Also, the clinical presentation of MV may suggest ominous disease processes which can lead to extensive and invasive diagnostic evaluations that may not be warranted. MVs include the following: Familial hemiplegic migraine Basilar migraine Benign coital headache Ophthalmoplegic migraine Retinal migraine Alternating hemiplegic migraine (primarily in childhood)
Extractions: (advertisement) Synonyms, Key Words, and Related Terms: abdominal migraine, acute confusional migraine, basilar migraine, benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood, cyclic vomiting of childhood, hemiplegic migraine, migraine, migraine aura without headache, ophthalmoplegic migraine, vascular headache Background: Migraine in children may be similar to adult presentations and include headache, with or without aura, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and relief with sleep. However, several variations of migraine are unique to children and rarely if ever occur in adults. Migraine may present with prominent nonheadache symptoms in young children (migraine without headache), or neurologic symptoms (aura) may be much more prominent than the headache. Various recognized childhood syndromes assumed to be pathophysiologically related to migraine include benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood, abdominal migraine, cyclic vomiting of childhood, and acute confusional migraine (acute confusional state). Basilar migraine (particularly in adolescent girls) may present with prominent dizziness and near-syncope and/or syncope with or without a subsequent headache. Hemiplegic migraine (usually an autosomal dominant disorder) may present in early childhood and occasionally may continue into adulthood. Ophthalmoplegic migraine also may occur in childhood.
