Powered by from "Project: Evaluation of a..." entire NIWI site (en) Titel Evaluatie van een diermodel voor neurale ontwikkelingsstoornissen Abstract Several lines of evidence suggest that the development of schizophrenia has, besides a genetic factor, also a prenatal component. Epidemiological studies have shown a greater incidence of schizophrenia in offspring of women exposed to influenza virus, malnutrition and other gestational complications during the second trimester of pregnancy. Also the absence of neurodegenerative signs (gliosis) suggest that schizophrenia may be a neurodevelopmental disorder. In our animal model we mimic a developmental defect by giving pregnant rats a single injection on embryonal day 11 with MAM (methylazoxymethanol acetate), a mitose inhibitor. This way cell division in the rat foetus is interrupted in the period when proliferation of the enthorinal cortex is occurring.
Extractions: Institute of Medicine report on thimerosal-containing vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders This information is adapted from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. On October 1, 2001, the Institute of Medicine's Immunization Safety Review Committee released its report examining whether or not the use of vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal can cause neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and speech or language delay. The Committee concluded, "The hyphothesis that thimerosal exposure through the recommended childhood immunization schedule has caused neurodevelopmental disorders is not supported by clinical or experimental evidence." However, the Committee also acknowledged that the epidemiological evidence was inadequate to either accept or reject a causal relationship.
Extractions: The usefulness of Essential Fatty Acids and micronutrient supplementation in neurodevelopmental Disorders. Jacques Duff. MAPS; MAAAPB; AMACNEM; MASNR Presented at the Australian Society for Neuronal Regulation Seminar, Sydney 2001. Of all the fatty acids found in foods, Omega 6, Linoleic acid (LA) and Omega 3, Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) cannot be manufactured by the body. These are called Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) since they must be present in the diet. The liver converts ALA into the long chain Omega 3 fatty acid, Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega 6 essential fatty acids undergo a similar conversion. The balance of these two EFAs in our diet and cells is essential for the maintenance of optimum cell wall (membrane) structures. These long chain EFAs are necessary for laying out optimum myelin sheath on brain neurons, and they play a major role in cell membranes of the brain and the retina, as well as lowering blood plasma triglycerides and cholesterol levels. They also play an essential role in all cells, as they are an integral part of their protective membrane . Consequently deficits in these essential nutrients can lead to cellular malnutrition and "leaky" cell membranes that may allow antigens into the cell body. Multi-system dysfunction in children with ADHD and Autism The World health Organisation (WHO), the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the US and here in Australia the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) have all identified that our modern diet lacks Omega 3 EFAs compared to the diet of our genetic ancestors in the Paleolithic period. Instead of a ratio of 1:1 of O3:O6, current dietary estimates are that we consume these EFAs in a ratio of 1:20 to 1:40. In addition these authorities have identified that many of us are depleted of certain essential micronutrients probably due to modern inorganic agricultural methods. We now consume a more limited range of fresh fruit and vegetables, and these are lacking in essential micronutrients.

Neurodevelopmental Disorders Neurodevelopment Disorders (and other interesting brain links). Autism It is not clear, however, whether this is the cause of the disorder. http://www.ling.rochester.edu/people/cross/neurodevelopmental.html
Extractions: (and other interesting brain links) There are many competing theories concerning the causes of autism, and how this disorder develops. A number of brain abnormalities have been identified as occurring in autistic individuals, including an increased number of synaptic connections. It is not clear, however, whether this is the cause of the disorder. Links: Lissencephaly is a severe form of mental retardation, which is caused by improper migration of the neurons that would normally make up the outermost layer of the brain (cortex). Links: People with dyslexia have special problems with reading, esp. recognizing the individual sounds of a word. Although the cause is unknown, improper neuronal placement, including disorderly arrangement of neurons within a given area, has been found in many individuals with dyslexia.

Since children who adhered to the complete immunization schedule may have been exposed to levels of mercury above some federal breakpoints, an IOM committee was convened to examine the causal link and biological plausibility of neurodevelopmental disorders as a result of thimerosal exposure. The FDA decision in 1999, however, was not an admission that thimerosal is dangerous. Rather, it was intended to reduce overall mercury exposure in children. No proven link The IOM review looked at available epidemiological, biological and clinical evidence relating to thimerosal and its active ingredient, ethylmercury. The panel also looked at analogous evidence from studies on methylmercury, a close chemical relative of ethylmercury found largely in foods such as fish.

Past and current research focuses on evaluation of existing instruments and development of new assessment instruments to better assess developmental status (e.g., language, sustained attention). In collaboration with colleagues from pediatrics, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy, I am developing, and evaluating, programs for parents of children with multiple needs and children with autism, focusing on skill development and parental support. I also continue to work with colleagues in psychology on a set of parent education materials for parents of typically developing children. Representative Publications Return to Psychology Home page

Extractions: This is an especially good time for you vacationers who plan to fly, because the Reagan administration, as part of the same policy under which it recently sold Yellowstone National Park to Wayne Newton, has "deregulated" the airline industry. What this means for you, the consumer, is that the airlines are no longer required to follow any rules whatsoever. They can show snuff movies. They can charge for oxygen. They can hire pilots right out of Vending Machine Refill Person School. They can conserve fuel by ejecting husky passengers over water. They can ram competing planes in mid-air. These innovations have resulted in tremendous cost savings which have been passed along to you, the consumer, in the form of flights with amazingly low fares, such as $29. Of course, certain restrictions do apply, the main one being that all these flights take you to Newark, and you must pay thousands of dollars if you want to fly back out.
