We captured and examined 1597 individuals between November 1994 and August 1999. Clinical conjunctivitis (eyelid or conjunctival swelling, erythema, discharge) was observed in 11% (n = 183) of the birds examined. Monthly conjunctivitis prevalence ranged from 0% to 43% during the study. Conjunctivitis in house finches exhibited marked seasonal fluctuation, with peak disease prevalence during winter months, and lower disease prevalence during the breeding season (March through August). Birds with these symptoms were diagnosed as infected by the microorganism Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). Reports of infected house finches have become more frequent and widespread. The disease has been documented in Ohio and states east of the Mississippi River as well as in some states west of the Mississippi River. Finches with symptoms of MG infections were observed in Ohio in the fall of 1994; reports to the Division of Wildlife, nature centers, wildlife rehabilitators, and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (organizer of Project FeederWatch) have increased. MG has been cultured from several goldfinches with swollen eyes.

The organism is carried in the upper respiratory system and is transmitted by direct contact between mother and babies, by sexual transfer, through the air over short distances, and can even be passed to the babies while going through the birth canal if the mother is infected. Stress or other illnesses can weaken your rat's immune system and cause your rat to break with an active mycoplasmal infection. If left untreated, this can lead to pneumonia. Therefore, it is very important to ensure a stress-free environment for your pet. This includes providing an uncrowded, well-ventilated, clean cage with a safe bedding product in which to live at all times. This will eliminate any chance for ammonia buildup from urine and feces, or phenols from cedar and pine, to damage the respiratory system's own protective capacity. It is also very important not to expose your pet to other rats who may be sick since a secondary bacterial or viral infection could allow the mycoplasmal infection to accelerate to pneumonia very quickly, possibly causing death.

    Extractions: Mycoplasmal Infection (“Walking Pneumonia”) We have had a number of reported case s of m ycoplasmal infection/mycoplasmal p neumonia at our school, and wanted to share some information about this infection: General Information This infection can be called mycoplasmal infection, mycoplasmal pneumonia, mycoplasma pneumonia or walking pneumonia. It is generally diagnosed when the presence of a bacteria called mycoplasma pneumoniae is detected through a blood test or is suspected. Some doctors will diagnose this infection based on symptoms alone. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is the most common pathogen in lung infections among persons from 5 to 35 years old. Symptoms include headache, malaise, sore throat, fever and cough. Acute symptoms usually persist for 1 to 2 weeks followed by gradual recovery, although many patients continue to experience symptoms with fatigue and malaise for several weeks or even longer Because of the nature of this illness, children with this infection may feel much worse than their symptoms imply. Mode of Transmission The infection is transmitted from person to person by droplet from the nose or throat of infected persons when they cough or sneeze. Transmission is thought to require prolonged close contact with an infected person. Symptoms generally begin 15-25 days after exposure.

It may be referred to as mycoplasmal pneumonia, mycoplasma pneumonia, mycoplasmal infection, or walking pneumonia. The infection is diagnosed when the presence of a bacteria called mycoplasma pneumoniae is detected by a blood test, although sometimes a doctor will diagnose based on symptoms alone. Symptoms may be very mild or could develop into a more severe condition. Symptoms can sometimes last for weeks or in some cases even a month or longer. The infection has a long incubation period and therefore tends to spread in community groups such as schools. Our nurses have put together a fact sheet for you to give you additional information about this infection. More specific information about mycoplasmal pneumonia is available here. Since the close of school in December for the break until now, a total of 23 diagnosed student cases of mycoplasmal pneumonia have been reported to our school nurses.
