"Most heart murmurs are not life-threatening," said Dr. Miguel Quiñones, professor of medicine at The DeBakey Heart Center at Baylor and The Methodist Hospital in Houston. "Many people who experience heart murmurs have perfectly healthy hearts. But, in addition to a regular heartbeat, the stethoscope picks up a buzzing or swishing sound as well. A murmur is caused by turbulent blood flow and is usually linked to a heart- valve disorder. Quiñones says there are two kinds of heart murmurs: functional and pathologic. An functional murmur is caused by turbulent blood flow through a normal heart valve. A pathologic murmur is due to blood flowing through a defective valve or an abnormal opening in the heart. "More than half of all patients diagnosed with a heart murmur have the functional type that doesn't require follow-up or treatment," said Quiñones, who is also director of the echocardiography laboratory at Methodist.

Despite their New York beginnings, the band became known as the quintessential all-girl L.A. band, brash, cool and OUT!. Since we last chatted with them, the band has undergone some changes, but Heather Grody and Leisha Hailey are still as fresh and lively as ever—and still finishing each other’s sentences! The two met in acting school in New York and clicked instantly. Leisha hails from Bellevue, Nebraska, outside Omaha; Heather grew up in Brooklyn, Long Island and Florida. They spent their early years together and developed a taste for life on the wild side. Along the way, they discovered they were equally talented as singers, guitarists and writers, and acting school gave way to the acoustic band that eventually became The Murmurs. For the first six or seven years, they paid their dues, touring endlessly, opened for bigger and bigger acts, played bigger venues, including Lilith Fair. Currently, they are working in the studio recording another CD, which is due out this spring.

Diagnosing a heart murmur begins with auscultation of (listening to) the heart-usually with a stethoscope. One of the most useful tests in evaluating a murmur is an echocardiogram. This is a sound wave test that produces a real-time image of the beating heart and is very good in assessing the status and function of the cardiac valves and chambers. Sometimes further studies, such as cardiac catheterization, will be required to further track down the specific abnormality and its significance, and to determine which cases will require treatment.

Mumbles is a much after the fact collection of odds and ends from the same period. Suit of Yellow Leaves was written the morning after my last day at a job. The night before I celebrated the end of that 'era' and in the process alienated someone I was romantically interested in. So in the process of a celebration I ended not only my job (a good move for me) but also ended a budding relationship (bad). I felt much worse about the whole situation after this song was already recorded and mixed.
