About two-thirds of patients with amyloidosis have primary (where no specific cause or disease is related to the abnormal protein deposits), less than 5% have secondary (associated with another chronic disease, often in multiple myeloma), less than 5% familial (inherited) and less than 5% have senile (occurring secondary to old age) amyloidosis. In patients with primary amyloidosis, 95% are over the age of 40 and 66% are men.

Extractions: My doctor called me at work on September 19, 2001, telling me that my monoclonal blood proteins were high and iron was low, indicating multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. It starts in the bone marrow and causes bone lesions. I needed to get to a hematologist quickly and get going on more tests and begin chemotherapy. On October 15, 2001, I began a chemotherapy regimen of the drugs VMCP/VBAP. This regimen consists of 6-week cycles divided into two 3-week parts. Stem cell therapy may follow over the next several months. I am now living in the place that I love, the beautiful, soggy Pacific Northwest, just north of Seattle. Perfect for ferry riding, watching the water, and sea kayaking. Donna, Kristen, Ian, and I live in a comfortable house about two miles from the waterfront. We left our friends and enchanting pond-front house in Aiken, South Carolina in January of 2001. Donna and I have returned to the place where we met and fell in love.

The growth of the tumor, which takes place in the bone marrow, its protein products and the individual response to the disorder will result in all of the organics disfunctions seen in this disease. Skeletal destruction with bone pain, anemia, hypercalcemia and renal failure are some of the features. Multiple Myeloma accounts for 1% of all malignant disease and slightly more than 10% of hematologic malignancies. The annual incidence of Multiple Myeloma is 4 per 100.000 increasing with aging. The median age of patients at the time of diagnosis is 61 years. It is more commom in men and blacks. The cause of Multiple Myeloma is unclear. Exposure to radiation, benzene and other organic solvents, herbicides, and insecticides may play a role. A genetic predisposition may also be involved. Some trials shows that chronic antigenic stimulation leads to a transformation of the progenitor B-cell, a fact that may explain the higher incidence of Multiple Myeloma in farmers, woodmakers and oilworkers. In the very beginning, cell production from the bone marrow stem cell results in two lineages with lymphoid characteristics : pre- T cell and pre-B cell. The first will migrate to the Thymus where they will be differenciated into T cells. The last cells will reach the peripheral blood as " tracer limphocytes " . This kind of cell is the result of a process of differentiation not related to antigen that produces a great variety of cells which express small amounts of immunoglobulin on their surface.

Extractions: There are estimated 13,500 new cases of myeloma in the U.S. each year which is approximately 20% of blood cancers and 1% of all types of cancer. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, cells that normally produces antibodies in response to infection. When myeloma cells build up in the bone marrow, this process disrupts the normal immune system as well as displacing blood forming cells resulting in anemia. Other complications include fatigue, loss of appetite and kidney damage. Treatments include observation and monitoring in some early forms and utilization of chemotherapies, radiation and stem-cell transplants in advancing stages. Although currently no one is claiming a cure for myeloma, it is an very treatable disease. Many patients go on to lead full lives for years, even decades, after diagnosis. With increasing research, the overall outlook for myeloma patients is improving steadily. It is more commonly seen after age of 60. This disease is due to overproduction of Plasma cells from the bone marrow . Under normal circumstances, these cells are in charge of producing immune globulins, the immune proteins that our body needs to fight infections. In case of Multiple Myeloma, the abnormal plasma cells produce abnormal and dysfunctional immune globulins. One that is used as an indicator of the disease is known as Beta 2 microglobulin . This disease is basically diagnosed by detecting these abnormal immune globulins in the blood, or alternatively, by observing the abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow. Causes: The cause of this illness is unknown. Signs and Symptoms Patients may not show any signs for quite sometime. This illness can present itself in many different fashions. 20% of patients are diagnosed incidentally, and during work up on another problem. As the disease progresses, it can cause any of the following problems: Diagnosis The diagnosis is established by certain blood tests and also taking a biopsy of the bone marrow.

You may lose your taste buds, your hair and some dignity, but you regain time and a whole bunch of fresh, virgin stem cells that are collected from your own body and then put back. Here is my spin on how my wife and I have worked with Myeloma, (and a spinal operation), and continue to do so everyday. We had the Transplant and came out the other side just fine; I am walking, carrying golf clubs, working out in a gym, eating, drinking and living a very happy, and probably, a higher quality of life than before. There is GREAT living after Chemo, Radiation, Hickman lines, Stem Cell Transplants and all of the other stuff you might experience. Establish a GREAT, POSITIVE ATTITUDE and sincere TRUST that you CAN get through it and you will. Only you can really believe and help you . Others can support you, but whatever you think in your own mind is the most important.
