Extractions: Though it's only recently begun to make headlines, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is not new: People have been reporting the symptoms of it on an increasing arc for the last 50 years, as our society has become more and more synthetic. Between 1940 and 1980, the production of synthetic organic chemicals increased from less than 10 billion pounds per year to more than 350 billion. In some ways, MCS is an allergy to modern lifea physical reaction to the common chemicals, ranging from detergents, pesticides, solvents and perfumes to foods and pharmaceuticals, that permeate our everyday existence. Less than one percent of the 1,000 new chemicals added each year have been tested for toxicity. No longer rare, MCS affects as much as 30 percent of Americans, with symptoms that range from the mild (headaches, fatigue) to the severe (chest pains, depression, shortness of breath). Despite its growing ubiquity, however, MCS is rarely taken seriously. As Rachel's Environment and Health Weekly explains it, "Because MCS does not fit any of the three currently-accepted mechanisms of diseaseinfectious, immune system, or cancertraditional medicine has not known how to explain MCS, and so has often labeled it 'psychogenic'originating in the patient's mind. This has left MCS sufferers in limbo. Told they are crazy, or imagining their disease, or making it up, they find themselves passed from physician to physician without any satisfactory answers and often without relief from their very real distress."

The condition is popularly believed to feature symptoms that result from exposure to one or more environmental agents. These can be anything from air- and water-borne pollutants to substances used in such everyday items as paper, furniture, and household cleaning products. Symptoms can range from depression, inability to concentrate and fatigue to headaches, chest pains and a variety of physical complaints. Iris R. Bell, MD, PhD., director of research here at the University of Arizona's Program in Integrative Medicine, is our resident MCS expert and is convinced that the condition as well as intolerance to low level exposures to unrelated environmental chemicals is a complex but real phenomenon that can be elicited by both stress and chemicals. She reports that some MCS patients suffer from depression or anxiety disorders as well as such chronic medical problems as sinusitis, menstrual disturbances, migraines and irritable bowel syndrome. These patients tend to have a higher than normal history of abuse during childhood as well as higher than normal family histories of substance abuse, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Dr. Bell estimates that MCS affects four to six percent of the population and that between 15 to 30 percent have less severe intolerance to chemicals in the environment.

Cullen, professor of medicine and epidemiology at Yale University, gave this definition: "MCS is an acquired disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms, referable to multiple organ systems, occurring in response to demonstrable exposure to many chemically unrelated compounds at doses far below these established in the general population to cause harmful effects." A person with MCS might have a severe reaction to something as simple as another person's perfume, cologne, hand/body cream, or hair spray, or might be made quite ill by the scent of gasoline, chemical solvents, fresh paint or varnish, insect spray, automobile exhaust, or any other odors that we are exposed to daily. Once sensitized, MCS is a life-long problem. It can begin in childhood, or may not make an appearance until the person is an adult. Its onset is usually a toxic exposure to an odor or chemical and a notable reaction to it. Subsequent expose to the same chemical/odor has a cumulative effect, causing more and more distress each time. What once caused only a shortness of breath can eventually become a life-threatening bout with asthma. What started as a mild "fogginess" of the thinking process can develop into severe and debilitating migraine headaches and an inability to concentrate.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a condition in which persons become ill following exposure to certain chemicals encountered in everyday life. Such chemicals include smoke, pesticides, plastics, synthetic fabrics, scented products, petroleum products, fumes, and paints. Persons who experience MCS have a more intense reaction to chemicals than most people, in much the same way some individuals have a far more allergic reaction to animals or pollen. How is MCS Related to Environmental Illness(EI)? MCS is acute sensitivity to chemical substances. EI includes not only this but also a broad range of conditions triggered by airborne pollution, food, naturally occurring substances such as molds and pollens, and electromagnetic fields. How Common is MCS? According to recent studies, approximately 15 percent of the population has increased sensitivity to chemicals. It is estimated that physicians have diagnosed five percent of people in the United States, or about 13 million people, as being especially vulnerable to certain common chemicals. There have been several recent studies, cited below, which support these findings. The incidence of MCS seems to be higher with women than men (as is the case with many autoimmune diseases), often appears between the ages of 30 and 50 years, and strikes without regard to race or economic background.
