Extractions: Melanoma (literally means black tumor) is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It begins in a type of skin cell called melanocyte . Melanocytes produce the skin pigment known as melanin , which is responsible for our natural skin color. When exposed to sunlight, these skin cells produce large amounts of melanin as part of the "tanning process" to help protect skin from burning. Pigmented markings of skin are known as moles, which contain high amounts of melanin. While moles are generally harmless, they can become cancerous ( malignant ). Melanoma is a malignant tumor that arises from melanocytes and is the leading cause of all skin cancer-related deaths. In the U.S., melanoma is the seventh most common cancer. The number of people with melanoma is rising and expected to affect 1 in 75 people by the year 2000. Early detection and treatment can potentially improve the chances for surviving this disease. The tumor can spread (metastasize) to other areas of the body, most commonly to the lung and liver. Patients with metastatic melanoma have a poorer chance of complete recovery.
