Extractions: edit Solar radiation Exposure during childhood is a more important risk factor than exposure in adulthood. (This is seen in migration studies in Australia where people tend to retain the risk profile of their country of birth if they migrate to Australia as an adult). Fair and red-headed people are at greater risk. Other risk factors include the " Dysplastic naevus syndrome " which is a familial condition of atypical moles carrying a low to moderate risk of acquiring melanoma. edit Features that affect prognosis are tumor thickness in mm ( Breslow depth ), depth related to skin structures (Clarke), type of melanoma, presence of ulceration, presence of satellite lesions, and presence of regional or distant metastasis

Extractions: Learn About Clinical Trials at UPCI Nearly a million new cases of skin cancer are reported every year. Of that number, about 42,000 Americans develop melanoma a skin cancer that generally begins with a change in the shape, color, or some other feature of a pigmented area of the skin. Melanoma is the most serious and potentially lethal of all skin cancers. Each year more than 7,500 patients die of the disease. The incidence of melanoma is rising more rapidly than the incidence of other solid tumors. Melanoma is the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 25 through 30. Because men and women with melanoma may be relatively young at onset (less than 48 years old), melanoma is one of the most significant causes of lost productivity in the U.S. population. The number of fatal melanomas continues to rise especially among older men. Education efforts have increased public awareness of melanoma and of the importance of skin-cancer screening. Earlier diagnosis and surgical treatment have improved the cure rate. Now more than 85 percent of patients with new cases of melanoma can expect to be cured by appropriate surgery. Nonsurgical treatment includes adjuvant therapies therapies used in combination that help prevent recurrence. UPMC Health System Home Page About UPMC Health Med Info Find a Doctor ... UPMC Hospitals

Extractions: How can I prevent a malignant melanoma? This is a type of skin cancer. The cancer is due to abnormal growth and spread of melanocytes in the skin. Melanocytes are a type of skin cell and are responsible for producing brown pigment when exposed to the sun. It is this brown pigment which gives us a 'sun tan'. Groups of melanocytes often form coloured lumps, called moles , in the skin. Ordinary moles are quite harmless. However, occasionally, the cells in a mole can become cancerous and start to grow and spread. This cancer is called a malignant melanoma. As the cancer grows, some of the cancer cells can spread to other areas of the body. If not treated early, the liver, lungs, brain, abdomen, and other parts of the body, can become invaded by cancer cells.

John McCain's nose was malignant, the Arizona Republican's press secretary said Tuesday. After the surgery late Monday afternoon, McCain had said it was a "non-malignant melanoma." The press secretary, Nancy Ives, said he "misspoke." According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there is no such thing as "nonmalignant melanoma" melanoma by definition is malignant. However, McCain's doctors at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in North Phoenix said the lesion was "in situ," meaning it hadn't spread beyond the original site where it was found. They called it "the earliest form of melanoma." When melanoma is caught at its earliest stage, it has a 96 percent cure rate, according to the American Cancer Society.

Melanoma - Overview - Oncologychannel melanoma, similar to skin cancer, is a cancer resulting in a dark tumor on the surface of the skin. In the US, melanoma is most common among whites. http://www.oncologychannel.com/melanoma/
Extractions: Overview Many sun-worshipers strive for the perfect tan, their bronzed bodies making them feel good, attractive, and healthy. But what many people may not realize is that tanning is actually quite dangerous and not so healthy after all. Too much exposure to UV radiation can damage the skin and lead to melanoma, a cancer that originates in skin cells known as melanocytes . In the U.S., melanoma is most common among whites. But worldwide, approximately 40% of all melanomas develop in nonwhite populations. The number of melanoma cases is increasing faster than any other cancer, especially in geographical areas where the population is largely white and the climate is sunny and hot. Unlike many cancers, researchers are fairly certain that they have identified one of the causes of melanoma: over-exposure to a certain kind of ultraviolet radiation (UVB wavelengths). The best prevention is to protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun. Protect your children as well. People who have experienced severe sunburns as a child are considered "at risk" for developing melanoma.
