It typically affects people 65 and older. In age-related macular degeneration, the most sensitive area of the retina breaks down, robbing a person of the fine vision needed to read a book or recognize a face. In severe cases, it can lead to almost total blindness. About 6 million Americans suffer from AMD, a number that is predicted to double by the year 2030 as the baby boomer generation ages. There are treatments for the disease, but the goal is prevention.

AMD is a disorder of the retina, a thin layer of nerve tissue responsible for vision that lines the inside of the eye. AMD primarily affects a small area in the center of the retina known as the macula. Symptoms include blurred or distorted central vision. Because of these symptoms, activities such as driving, reading, writing checks and recognizing faces can be difficult. AMD appears in two forms: wet AMD and dry AMD. In wet AMD, abnormal collections of blood vessels grow under the macula. These new blood vessels have a tendency to be very fragile and often leak blood and fluid under the macula. This leakage causes rapid damage to the macula and central vision loss can occur in a short period of time. Wet AMD does not ordinarily cause loss of peripheral (side) vision. Wet AMD treatment is directed at the abnormal blood vessels under the macula. In some instances, the ophthalmologist may perform laser surgery in an attempt to prevent further vision loss. However, most patients are not candidates for laser surgery because of the size and location of the abnormal blood vessel growth. Vision loss often occurs after laser treatment due to the progression of the disease. Other wet AMD treatments are being investigated.

Age-related macular degeneration is a disorder of the retina, the light-sensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye that can cause gradual vision loss, and is the leading cause of blindness among European-descended people older than 65 years. This is the early form of age related macular degeneration. There are three forms of age related macular degeneration. All three forms can cause vision loss. However, they do so at different rates. Dry or atrophic macular degeneration is a slow degenerative process with gradual vision loss over many years. It may lead to severe central vision loss, but peripheral vision is not affected. The "wet" form of macular degeneration or choroidal neovascularization (CNV) usually occurs suddenly. Now researchers are happy to have discovered a treatment that at least slows the development of the disease in the form of a potent combination of antioxidant vitamins. For reasons that have yet to be understood, sometimes the light-sensitive cells in the macula break down, resulting in a loss of central vision. In one form of the disease, the ``wet'' form, new blood vessels form behind the retina causing additional problems. Some 15 million people in the US alone have macular degeneration. Symptoms typically begin to appear when people reach their 50s and 60s. Nearly 25% of those over the age of 65 develop the disease. The early symptoms involve some blurring of vision and gradual loss of central vision. Eventually all but the outermost peripheral vision is lost. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) followed 4,757 older volunteers (55-80 years) with various levels of risk for developing macular degeneration in 11 clinical centers throughout the United States. Participants received either 80 milligrams of zinc oxide; an antioxidant combination including 500 milligrams of vitamin C; 400 IU of vitamin E; 15 milligrams of beta-carotene; the antioxidant combination plus zinc; or a placebo.
