Definition Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a progressive disease of the retina wherein the light-sensing cells in the central area of vision (the macula) stop working and eventually die. The disease is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, and it is most common in people who are age sixty and over. Other less common types of macular degeneration, which are hereditary and can affect younger people, are Best's disease, Stargardt's disease, and Sorsby's disease. Collectively, these types are called juvenile macular degeneration. For definitions of each, see the MD Support Glossary with accompanying links. Other diseases of the retina and extreme myopia (near-sightedness) can also result in degeneration of the macula. Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in Americans over the age of 60. It is estimated that 10 million Americans will experience this age-related visual impairment during their retirement years. Macular degeneration is a disorder of the retina, the light-sensitive inner lining of the back of the eye. The macula is a small, central portion of the retina which is necessary for sharp, "straight ahead" vision needed for reading, driving a car or recognizing faces. There are a number of abnormalities associated with the term "age-related macular degeneration." They range from mild changes with no decrease in vision to abnormalities severe enough to result in the loss of all "straight ahead" vision. Macular degeneration does not cause total blindness because the remaining and undamaged parts of the retina around the macula continue to provide "side" vision. There are two main types of macular degeneration, "dry" and "wet," both are discussed in the next section.

Degeneration results from a partial breakdown of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The RPE is the insulating layer between the retina and the choroid (the layer of blood vessels behind the retina). The RPE acts as a selective filter to determine what nutrients reach the retina from the choroid. Many components of blood are harmful to the retina and are kept away from the retina by normal RPE. Breakdown of the RPE interferes with the metabolism of the retina, causing thinning of the retina (the "dry" phase of macular degeneration). These harmful elements may also promote new blood vessel formation and fluid leakage (the "wet" phase of macular degeneration).
