The normal cellular counterpart is a B cell found in small numbers in the mantle zone of lymphoid follicles (see diagram below) [1, 4]. MCL was originally classified as a low-grade lymphoma, but recent reports of outcome indicate that most cases behave as an intermediate-grade lymphoma. It has neither the long survival of low-grade tumors nor the response to aggressive chemotherapy of high-grade tumors. One exception is the infrequent "mantle zone" variant, which may have a more indolent course [1, 2]. Clinical features: Histologic changes: This tumor is difficult to diagnose histologically. Furthermore, four types have been described (see figure). Cells are small- to medium-sized lymphocytes with irregularly-shaped nuclei, small nucleoli, and scant cytoplasm. The frequency of each type varies somewhat with the series [2]. Immunologic and molecular features distinguish this lymphoma from others. Cells express the pan-T-cell antigen CD5, surface IgM and IgD, and pan-B-cell antigens CD 19, CD 20, and CD 22. Figure: Each of the circles below illustrates a subtype of MCL.

Lymphomas are divided into 2 categories: Hodgkin's lymphoma, if a type of cells called Reed-Steinberg cells are present, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). The rate of NHL rose steadily among people with AIDS from 1989 to 1995. Research increasingly points to cooperation between or among viruses to produce this kind of cancer. However, clinical research on AIDS-related lymphoma in the brain is sadly lacking. Incidence Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (previously called lymphosarcoma) is a type of cancer that affects cells found mainly in the lymph nodes and the spleen. Leukemia and lymphoma are the common names for cancer of the white blood cells. Cancer can transform any white blood cell at any stage in the progression from bone marrow stem cells to mature T-cells and B-cells. NHL can arise at any stage of HIV disease. The rate at which people with AIDS develop NHL continued to rise until 1995, when highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART therapy combining more than one class of anti-HIV drugs) began to become widespread. The increased number of people with HIV and NHL apparently was proportional to the extent and duration of suppression of their immune systems.

Extractions: Treatment of Lymphoma in Dogs: A Comparison of Three Chemotherapy Protocols Lymphoma is a common malignancy of dogs, and is the neoplastic disease most commonly treated with chemotherapy in veterinary medicine. A wide variety of single agent and combination chemotherapy protocols have been evaluated for the treatment of lymphoma in dogs. There is, however, no consensus among veterinary oncologists as to whether an "ideal" protocol has yet been developed. Single Agent Therapy Prednisone, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, epirubicin, cytosine arabinoside, and actinomycin-D are among the drugs that have been evaluated as single agents for the treatment of lymphoma in dogs. Of these, doxorubicin seems to be the most effective single agent. The overall response rate (partial and complete response) has been reported to be 81% with median remission and survival times of 131 and 230 days, respectively. Doxorubicin has also been reported to be effective in inducing a second remission in dogs previously treated with combination chemotherapy. Combination Chemotherapy Resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapuetic agents is a major obstacle to the effective treatment of cancer in both veterinary and human medicine. While we have yet to overcome all the problems of drug resistance in the treatment of lymphoma, the use of a combination of chemotherapuetic agents is an important step in addressing this problem. Within a population of cancer cells, the probability of the development of resistant clones is directly related to cell number. At the time of diagnosis, it is probable that the population of lymphoma cells in a canine patient contains several cell lines that are resistant to one or more chemotherapuetic agents. Extractions: Lymphoma refers to cancers that involve a type of white blood cell. Cells called B-lymphocytes multiply rapidly and form tumors. These can occur in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, intestines, or spinal cord. Lymphoma of the brain or spinal cord is called central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma. The longer you live with a suppressed immune system, the more likely you are to develop NHL. It is serious and fatal, often within a year. NHL is usually associated with long-term HIV disease and low CD4 counts. Combination antiviral therapy has significantly reduced the rates of most opportunistic infections. This is not true for NHL. The first signs of NHL are swollen lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, and weight loss of more than 10%. These symptoms occur with several AIDS-related illnesses. If doctors cannot find another cause for these symptoms, they will test for NHL. NHL is usually diagnosed based on imaging techniques or biopsies. The imaging techniques can include various scans (CAT, PET, gallium and thallium.) Biopsies involve microscopic examination of cells from lymph nodes or other affected tissues.
