Extractions: Just a quick update to let you know that Alex had the LP (lumbar puncture) on Tuesday and the results came back yesterday. Zero leukemia blasts in her CNS! At this point it's possible that the seizure was caused by whatever respiratory virus all four of us currently have. It also appears that the seizure triggered the increase in her White Blood Count (WBC). As of Tuesday her WBC was back down to normal range. Because of the virus, Alex is going to miss school all of this week and next week is Easter break. As long as there are no further complications she'll return the school after the break. Thanks again to everyone for helping us through yet another crisis. Take care. We're out of the hospital! Alex had an MRI today and although the calcifications (scarring) from her prior radiation and chemo treatments remain, there was nothing there to cause alarm. The doctors feel that she will remain stable as long as she remains on Depakote, an anti-seizure medication. What this means is that Alex will more than likely have to take Depakote for the rest of her life to avoid future seizures. The doctors also didn't feel it was necessary to do the LP (lumbar puncture) before we left the hospital today. We should know by Monday when it will be scheduled for.

Extractions: Acute lymphocytic leukemia, also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute lymphoid leukemia, is a common leukemia. About 4,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. Most cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) occur in children under age 10, but it can appear in all age groups. ALL is an acute leukemia, which means it is a disease that gets worse quickly. ALL is not inherited. It is caused by a change in the cells in the bone marrow. In most cases, no one knows why this change occurs, but a few environmental factors are linked with ALL. These include high doses of radiation and exposure to toxins before birth or in early childhood. Symptoms and Diagnosis In a healthy person, the bone marrow makes the blood stem cells that turn into the white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets in the blood. An ALL patient's marrow makes too many blast cells (immature white blood cells). These blast cells should turn into the white blood cells called lymphocytes, but they do not. So many blast cells grow that the marrow does not have room to make the normal red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This causes these symptoms of ALL:

Extractions: Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is also known by several other names, including acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. AML is not inherited or contagious. It develops when there is a defect in the immature cells in the bone marrow. The mixed cell leukemias represent another difficulty for classification: they are not clearly B or T cells and may represent a very early precursor (perhaps of both lines) or lineage infidelity.
