Extractions: Nonverbal Learning Disorder, known as NLD, is a neurophysiological disorder orginating in the right hemisphere of the brain. Reception of nonverbal or performance-based information governed by this hemisphere is impaired in varying degrees, including problems with visual-spatial, intuitive, organizational, evaluative, and holistic processing functions. Sue Thompsons death on April 16th has deprived the NLD community of a gifted scientific observer who was not only imaginative and visionary, but also astute and pragmatic. She translated the neuroscientific rhetoric of ivory tower NLD into user-friendly language that could easily and effectively be used in our homes and schools. Sues awareness that people dealing with this complex learning disorder need care and education led to the founding of SHARE Support, Inc., the grass roots organization that laid the groundwork for the NLDA. Referring to the frequent explanations required by some children with NLD, Sue originally titled her first book, I Shouldnt Have to Tell You. Perhaps you should not have had to, Sue, but we are so very glad you did. All of us whose lives are touched by NLD owe you undying gratitude. May you find eternal life in the accomplishments of people for whom your insight made the difference between failure and success.

It is difficult to describe or list typical characteristics of learning disabled gifted people because there are so many types of giftedness and so many possible learning disabilities. The biggest problem in identification is that a disability often masks or inhibits the expression of giftedness, so that it is difficult to tell whether a person's abilities are outstanding enough to indicate giftedness. On the other hand, giftedness can often mask the learning disability because the person's abilities can help him or her overcome or compensate for the disability. Some weaknesses that are observed more frequently than others in these children are the following: poor handwriting, poor spelling, lack of organizational ability, and difficulty in employing systematic strategies for solving problems. More frequently observed strengths are in speaking, understanding and identifying relationships, vocabulary, knowledge of information related to a wide variety of topics, and observational skills. In general, thinking and reasoning processes are often not impaired, but the mechanics involved in writing, reading, mathematics computation, and completing academic tasks often present great difficulties.

Extractions: Prevention and Policy Practice The public expects schools to socialize children as well as to educate them.1 In fact, socialization, rather than academics, is why many parents choose public education over private or home school. However, public criticism of schools' performance in both roles has increased in recent years. The public wants schools to be responsible not only for improving achievement but also for curbing disruptive, violent, and antisocial behavior. As a result, support is growing for "zero tolerance" discipline policies and alternative school placement for disruptive students. Discussions about discipline have especially focused on special education students. Some teachers and parents are against the inclusion of potentially disruptive students in regular education classrooms and schools. They want to change laws and policies that discourage exclusion, suspension, and expulsion of such students. However, for children suffering from disabilities and other risk factors like poverty, crime, and abuse, traditional discipline methods and policies may exacerbate rather than remedy problem behavior.2 Discipline reacts to behavior that has already occurred. Schools may also need to focus their efforts on prevention.
