Normally, men have an X and a Y and women have two X's. In Klinefelter syndrome, a male has two X's and a Y. The condition is common and affects 1 in 500 men. The infant appears normal at birth, but the defect usually becomes apparent in puberty when secondary sexual characteristics fail to develop (or develop late). At this time, testicular changes occur that eventually result in infertility in the majority of those affected. Some mild cases may go undetected, with no abnormalities present except infertility.

Extractions: Resources Klinefelter syndrome is a chromosome disorder in males. People with this condition are born with at least one extra X chromosome. Klinefelter syndrome is a condition where one or more extra X-chromosomes are present in a male. Boys with this condition appear normal at birth. They enter puberty normally, but by mid puberty have low levels of testosterone causing small testicles and the inability to make sperm. Affected males may also have learning disabilities and behavior problems such as shyness and immaturity and at an increased risk for certain other health problems. Klinefelter syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities. About 1 in every 500 to 800 males is born with this disorder. Approximately 3% of the infertile male population have Klinefelter syndrome. Chromosomes are found in the cells in the body. Chromosomes contain genes, structures that tell the body how to grow and develop. Chromosomes are responsible for passing on hereditary traits from parents to child. Chromosomes also determine whether the child will be male or female. Normally, a person has a total of 46 chromosomes in each cell, two of which are responsible for determining that individual's sex. These two sex chromosomes are called X and Y. The combination of these two types of chromosomes determines the sex of a child. Females have two X chromosomes (the XX combination); males have one X and one Y chromosome (the XY combination).

In other words, chromosomes are responsible for passing on hereditary traits from parents to child, like eye color, height, nose shape, etc. In Klinefelter syndrome, a problem very early in development results in an abnormal number and arrangement of chromosomes. Most commonly, a male with Klinefelter syndrome will be born with 47 chromosomes in each cell, rather than the normal number of 46. The extra chromosome is an X chromosome. This means that rather than having the normal XY combination, the male has an XXY combination. Some Klinefelter patients have more complex chromosomal errors, including the presence of 48, 49, or even 50 chromosomes. All of the extra chromosomes are Xs.

It occurs in about 1 out of every 1000 newborn males, and most of these children will have a chromosome complement equal to 47, XXY , although other patterns also exist. Since you must have a Y chromosome to have this disorder, it affects only males. The symptoms of Klinefelters may include a typical body appearance, being

Extractions: Main Page See live article Alphabetical index Klinefelter's syndrome is a condition caused by a chromosomal abnormality in males; sufferers have a pair of X chromosomes instead of just one. The XXY chromosome arrangement is a common genetic abnormality, occurring as frequently as 1 in 1,000 male births, but the symptoms that may result from having the extra chromosome is less common. Because of this extra chromosome, individuals with the abnormality are usually referred to as "XXY Males" rather than as "suffering from Klinefelter's syndrome." In mammals with more than one X chromosome, the genes on all but one X chromosome are barred from being expressed. This happens in XXY males as well as XX females. A few genes, however, have corresponding genes on the Y chromosome and are not barred. These triploid genes in XXY males may be responsible for the symptoms of Klinefelter's syndrome. In adults, the syndrome is characterised by gynecomastia (enlarged breasts), a rounded body type with abnormal body proportions, sparse facial and body hair, small testes, and an inability to produce sperm. Most XXY males have some degree of language impairment as well. The syndrome is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, pulmonary disease, varicose veins, and osteoporosis. The condition was identified in by Dr. Harry Klinefelter in Boston. The cause was not found until the 1950s; the condition is incurable, but its symptoms can be treated in a number of ways, including testosterone treatment and other therapies.

Extractions: Archives Klinefelter Syndrome Introduction Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a genetic disorder that is thought to be the most common chromosomal variation found in humans, with an occurrence rate of 1 in every 500 to 1,000 live born males. KS, which is found exclusively in males, is caused by a variation in the sex chromosomes, resulting in a hormone imbalance. KS occurs when a male has an extra X chromosome. That is, instead of having the typical 46 chromosomes, males with KS have 47 (typical males are classified as 46, XY, where they inherit the X chromosome from their mother and the Y chromosome from their father; males with KS are 47, XXY). The extra chromosome can be inherited from either the mother or the father, however, advanced maternal age does increase the risk slightly of having a child with XXY. KS was first described in 1942 by Dr. Harry Klinefelter and coworkers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In the late 1950's it was then revealed by other researchers that the cause of KS was due to an extra X chromosome. Features and Characteristics Not all males with XXY actually develop the syndrome (or its symptoms and characteristics). In fact, many males show no abnormalities at all. However, for those who have developed KS, the following characteristics have been identified:
