Extractions: Imagine going to bed and not waking up for five months! Sounds like the story of Rip Van Winkle, but Kristin Brown's life is no fairy tale. She suffers from a tragic sleep disorder doctors can't predict, explain, or cure. EXTRA puts this puzzling condition in focus. For 23-year-old Kristie Brown, preparing for bed each night is frightening. She knows that once her head hits the pillow she may not wake up for days, weeks, and even months at a time. Kristie suffers from one of the world's rarest and most bizarre sleep disorders. It's called Kleine-Levin Syndrome and its cost Kristin her teenage years, her friends, and a normal life. "I missed my homecoming. I missed cheerleading. I missed all kinds of Dances and social events." Kristie says. It started when Kristie was only 15. That's when she went to bed one night and didn't fully wake up for 10 days straight. "She didn't respond to any of our questions anything that we asked her. She just stayed in bed and stayed extremely quiet." Kristie's mother tells us. "In September of 1993 she went to sleep and she did not wake up until February of 1994." We watched a home video of Kristie during an episode. She drifts in and out of a sleeplike state. Each time Kristie's mother stays by her side offering a little bit of food, a little bit of water, occasional groggy, trance-like trips to the bathroom.
Extractions: People with a rare disorder sleep for weeks at a time. Every now and then, Ted Bigatel falls asleep and doesn't wake up for a week. He sleeps all day and night, rousing himself only enough to eat and go to the bathroom. Even then, Bigatel isn't really awake. "I'm kind of in a fog," the 15-year-old from Allentown, Pa., told Current Science. "It's like I'm walking around the house, but I don't live there." Taryn Sardis, an 18-year-old from Corte Madera, Calif., experiences similar episodes every few months. Hers last about ten days. Stephen Maier, a 27-year-old from San Jose, Calif., has had the same strange sleep episodes since he was 13. Maier recalled his first: "I was sleeping on the couch, and my parents couldn't wake me up." The episode lasted two weeks. Once or twice a year since then, Maier has experienced a two-week-long episode of almost nonstop sleep.

Some environmental influences might be extreme temperatures, environmental noises, and changes in surrounding environment, medication side effects, and consumption of some drugs, such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. They believe that abnormal sleep can be treated by benzodiazepines.

Extractions: Dear Anne, There are many disorders which cause over-eating, which can lead to obesity. You did not state your son's weight, or if his uncontrollable eating is associated with recurrent compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, repeated laxative or diuretic use, or excessive exercise. If this should be the case, a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa is likely. Over-eating may also be seen in medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, and in rare syndromes such as Kluver-Bucy syndrome and Kleine-Levin syndrome, to name a few. The good news is that eating disorders can be successfully treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and medications. I hope you find this information helpful. Carpenter, R. Yassa and R. Ochs A patient with Kleine-Levin syndrome, typical except that onset was at 39 years of age, died during a symptomatic period. Autopsy disclosed recent and old lesions in the medial thalamus involving intralaminar, medial, and some dorsal nuclei as well as the pulvinar. Despite massive microglial infiltration, there was minimal neuronal loss. The hypothalamus was not involved. The findings suggest a viral cause for Kleine-Levin syndrome.
