The most obvious example is the chronic "sore throat" that many allergy suffers experience. The constant mucus drainage and resultant histamine release result in tiny disruptions in the protective surface layers of the mucus membrane lining the throat. This disruption makes the sensitive subsurface layers susceptible to irritants such as spices or acid foods like hot sauce and orange juice. And that leads to even more irritation and even hemorrhagic tissue changes (bleeding). This disruption also allows the ordinarily harmless bacteria that are necessary for digestion to set up local infections in the irritated tissues.

The cause of IC is unknown. No treatment is uniformly effective for patients with IC. Interstitial cystitis, or IC, is often difficult to diagnose and to treat satisfactorily. According to Russell Lawson, MD, former professor and chief of urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, IC should be suspected when a patient has problems that mimic a urinary tract infection – such as burning, frequency and urgency – but with negative urine cultures and no response to antibiotic therapy. At that point your physician should consider the possibility of IC and send you to a urologist for consultation. Urologists often use a procedure called cystoscopy to visualize the detrusor muscle and bladder wall. The detrusor muscle helps to empty the bladder and a cystoscopy will help to evaluate its current level of functioning. Key findings include the discovery of inflammation in the detrusor and a reduced bladder capacity.

Symptoms of IC vary from case to case, but often include mild discomfort, pressure, tenderness, or even intense pain in the bladder and surrounding area. People, usually women, who have IC may also experience a frequent and urgent need to urinate. A relatively newly recognized disorder, IC has been a diagnosis for only about 20 years now, and is difficult to diagnose correctly. Because symptoms vary so widely, many scientists believe IC is a syndrome rather than a specific disease. Most scientists also do not believe that interstitial cystitis is caused by bacteria, and there are many theories on what does cause IC. We do know, however, that IC is neither a psychosomatic nor a stress-related disorder. In this case, it is important to see a urologist, who would have to diagnose IC through a process of ruling out other possibilities. An extensive list of other, similar disorders that need to be checked off the list before a diagnosis of IC can be made include bacterial cystitis (urinary tract infection), bladder cancer, kidney problems and kidney stones, tuberculosis, vaginal infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), endometriosis, radiation cystitis, and neurological disorders. A urologist may also perform a cystoscopy (an examination of the bladder with a tube) to check for hemorrhages on the bladder wall. These occur in about 95 percent of patients with IC.
