Extractions: T he most common symptom of Hodgkin's Disease is a painless swelling of one or more lymph nodes. This swelling is obvious in the neck and underarm sites. This swelling is much more difficult to detect when the thoracic nodes are swollen. In my case these nodes had swollen from the normal bean-sized 0.5cm to a whopping 10cm x 5cm. This large body of swollen lymph nodes in the chest is called a mediastinal mass and is common in newly diagnosed patients. Other symptoms include one or more of the following: drenching night sweats unexplained weight loss or weight gain fevers and chills discomfort after alcohol fatique or pain itching The presence of one or more of these symptoms weighs in the staging of the disease. Diagnosis for Hodgkin's is pretty uniform in the US and elsewhere. When a patient presents with symptoms a series of scans are performed. The most common types of scan are Computerized Tomography Scan (CT or CAT-scans) and/or Magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) These scans are initially performed for the chest abdomen and pelvis. Extractions: A DULT H ODGKIN'S D ISEASE Hodgkin's Disease Overview Hodgkin's Disease, often referred to as Hodgkin's Lymphoma, is a malignancy that starts in lymphatic tissue and may move into other parts of the body including the testes, lung, and bone marrow. Other lymphomas are classified as Non-Hodgkin's and occur more frequently than Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Hodgkin's Lymphoma is differentiated for the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells in the area of malignancy. This cell, and other forms of it, are specific to Hodgkin's Disease. Because of the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells, cancer cells in Hodgkin's disease look different under a microscope than cells of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and other cancers. Reed-Sternberg cells are believed to be a form of malignant B-lymphocyte. Normal B- lymphocytes are the cells that make antibodies that help fight infections. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) appears to be a factor in about 40-50% of Hodgkin's patients. Other recent studies also show that Interleukin-13, a natural cytokine in the body, may be produced rapidly by malignant Hodgkin's cells. The cause of Hodgkin's disease has not yet been found and is currently being researched.
