Discussion Groups Occurs when the soft gel-like material between your vertebrae (spinal bones) ruptures through the covering and pushes onto the nerve roots coming off your spinal cord. A herniated disk usually occurs from chronic stress to the disk's outer covering called the annulus fibrosis. Activities such as repetitive lifting, smoking and working with tools that vibrate cause faster degeneration of the covering of your disk and can increase your risk for having a disk herniation. Some people with disk problems do not have any history of these problems or injury. This is because natural aging can also cause disks to weaken and rupture. The pain is usually described as beginning in the buttock and traveling into the back part of the thigh and into the foot. The pain is sharp and sometimes causes someone to collapse the leg. In fact, most people with a true herniated disk have more leg pain than back pain. Lying on your side with your knees flexed up sometimes relieves the pain. Sitting with all of the pressure on your tailbone worsens the pain. It is also worse with any sudden movements of your back.

Extractions: Summary Side view of herniated lumbar disk. For many, the only treatment is surgical removal of part of the herniated disk; a major traumatic operation that requires anesthesia, the dissection of muscle and removal of bone and bone fusion. Now there is a new and less traumatic procedure for some disk patients known as percutaneous micro-decompression cervical/lumbar discectomy with laser thermodiskoplasty, an outpatient procedure.

Extractions: The usefulness of surgery versus nonoperative measures in managing the patient with a herniated lumbar disk presenting with sciatica is somewhat controversial. Although most patients improve with nonoperative measures and time, some continue to have symptoms that impact on their ability to work and perform daily activities. Lumbar diskectomy, although widely used, remains problematic for surgeons due to uncertainties regarding its risks, benefits, indications, and optimal technique. The purpose of this article is to assess the outcome of conventional diskectomy techniques and compare them with nonoperative therapies.

Extractions: Home Herniated nucleus pulposus DESCRIPTION A condition in which part or all of the soft, gelatinous central portion of an intervertebral disk (the nucleus pulposus) is forced through a weakened part of the disk, resulting in back pain and leg pain caused by nerve root irritation. The spinal vertebrae are separated by cartilage disks filled with a gelatinous substance, that provide cushioning to the spinal column. These disks may herniate (move out of place) or rupture from trauma or strain, especially if degenerative changes have occurred in the disk. Radiculopathy refers to any disease affecting the spinal nerve roots. A herniated disk is one cause (but not the only cause) of radiculopathy (sciatica). Most herniation takes place in the lumbar area of the spine. Lumbar disk herniation occurs 15 times more often than cervical (neck) disk herniation, and it is one of the most common causes of lower back pain. The cervical disks are affected 8% of the time and the upper-to-mid-back (thoracic) disks only 1 to 2% of the time. Nerve roots (large nerves that branch out from the spinal cord) may become compressed resulting in neurological symptoms, such as sensory or motor changes.

Surgery for Parkinson Herniated Lumbar Disk Excessive weight, bad postures, undue movements, improper weight lifting and other kind of traumas may weaken the inter vertebral disks. When this occurs the pulpous nucleus (spongy center) will bulge against the annulus (outer ring), or even be squeezed through it (extruded disk). If this bulged, or herniated disk, presses one of the nerves, it will produce pain going down the leg, in the distribution of the nerve, and maybe in the lower back. Sciatic pain occurs when the disk presses one of the nerves that form the sciatic nerve. Other symptoms could be weakness, tingling or numbness on the areas corresponding to the affected nerve. Sometimes bladder compromise is also present, which is made evident for urine retention and this need to be taken care as an emergency. The first steps to deal with a herniated or prolapsed lumbar disk are conservative. These include rest, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication and in some cases physical therapy. At this point it is convenient to have some plain X-rays done, in search of some indirect evidence of the disk problem, as well as of degenerative changes on the spine.

Extractions: Home Health Center > Conditions and Treatments Your spinal column is made up of vertebrae separated by cartilage-like disks that act as cushions and shock absorbers for your back. When an injury or a degenerative disease causes the disk to weaken or tear, the center of the disk pops out and compresses the spinal nerve. The pinched spinal nerve causes pain. Recovering from a herniated lumbar disk takes a long time, but there are treatment guidelines you can follow that will reduce your symptoms. Steps: Rest in bed for up to 2 weeks. Be sure your mattress is firm. If it's not, place a bed board under your mattress. Lying absolutely flat is not necessary unless it offers you the most relief from pain. You may want to elevate your legs and thighs somewhat to reduce tension in the back. Try putting a small pillow under your knees. Avoid lying on your stomach.
