Anyways, he asked me a billion questions, checked out David's x-rays, and then told me what was going on. David's been diagnosed with hemihypertrophy. That basically means that one of his legs is growing faster than the other and that he's at risk for different kinds of tumors. I've been going crazy looking up stuff online about it. Tomorrow we go in for an ultrasound on his kidney to make sure that a tumor hasn't already started there. I'm trying not to cry hysterically. David, meanwhile, has been his normal happy self. A retrospective 17-year review of hemihypertrophy and Wilms' patients was performed. In a population of 83 Wilms' tumor patients, 2.0% had hemihypertrophy. Of 29 hemihypertrophy patients, 3.0% had Wilms' tumor. These results were then combined with the known literature to yield an incidence of hemihypertrophy in a Wilms' population of 3.0%, and an incidence of Wilms' in a hemihypertrophy population of 2.5%. This is markedly higher than the incidence of either in the general population. The authors recommend abdominal ultrasound screening of all children with hemihypertrophy until the age of eight years. Sincerely, Dr. Warren Top of Page Dear Dr. Warren: My daughter is 7 years old. When she was three I noticed while she was sleeping that her one leg was slightly larger than the other. After the years passed it turned out her entire one side was larger including her ear. We've seen various specialist which say she doesn't have any symtoms as being any type of syndrome. We now see a lymph specialist annually to have a bone scan to measure out the difference in growth. The specialist now says there's not much we can do but have her growth in the large leg stunted so the other catches up. She's very tiny for her age. She presently weighs only 37 pounds and is 45 inches tall. She is extremely bright and she is academically excelling in all subjects in school. I'm just afraid that we haven't done enough to find out what this really is. Could you give me any advice or should I just wait it out til she is ten for possible surgery to stunt the growth of her leg?
