Extractions: What affects one side of the heart eventually will effect both sides as the heart and lungs are interconnected systems. Left side failure occurs when left ventricular output is less than the volume of blood received from the right side of the heart via the pulmonary circulation. Congestion in the pulmonary circuit ensues and the systemic blood pressure falls. Myocardial infarction is the most common cause of left heart failure but it can also be caused by hypertension aortic insufficiency or cardiomyopathy Right heart failure, similarly, occurs when the right ventricle cannot pump the volume of blood returned to it. The resulting congestion of the systemic venous system and decreased output to the lungs causes venous distention, swelling of distensible organs to produce hepatomegaly, splenomegaly and peripheral edema. In addition, many of the effects of left heart failure are seen because of the inadequate return from the lungs and output of the left ventricle. The causes of right heart failure are left heart failure

We believe that our advanced understanding of the biology of cardiovascular disease combined with our clinical development expertise in cardiovascular therapeutics provide us with the capability to discover novel therapies, as well as identify, license or acquire products that address serious, debilitating cardiovascular disorders that are not adequately treated with existing therapies. We currently market one product in Europe, Perfan I.V., for the treatment of acute decompensated heart failure, and we have three product candidates in late-stage clinical development: enoximone capsules for the treatment of chronic heart failure, ambrisentan for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and darusentan for the treatment of uncontrolled hypertension.

Extractions: HOME SITE INDEX CONTACT US TIPS ... Publications An estimated 4.8 million Americans have congestive heart failure (CHF). Increasing prevalence, hospitalizations, and deaths have made CHF a major chronic condition in the United States. It often is the end stage of cardiac disease. Half of the patients diagnosed with CHF will be dead within 5 years. Each year, there are an estimated 400,000 new cases. The annual number of deaths directly from CHF increased from 10,000 in 1968 to 42,000 in 1993, with another 219,000 related to the condition. 6 pages. Extractions: (En español) The words "heart failure" sound alarming, but they do not mean that your heart has suddenly stopped working. Instead, heart failure means your heart is not pumping as well as it should to deliver oxygen-rich blood to your body's cells. Congestive heart failure (CHF) happens when the heart's weak pumping action causes a buildup of fluid called congestion in your lungs and other body tissues. CHF usually develops slowly. You may go for years without symptoms, and the symptoms tend to get worse with time. This slow onset and progression of CHF is caused by your heart's own efforts to deal with its gradual weakening. Your heart tries to make up for this weakening by enlarging and by forcing itself to pump faster to move more blood through your body. Who is at risk for developing CHF, and what are its causes?

The term "heart failure" should not be confused with cardiac arrest, a situation in which the heart actually stops beating. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Heart failure is almost always a chronic, long-term condition, although it can sometimes develop suddenly. This condition may affect the right side, the left side, or both sides of the heart. As the heart's pumping action is lost, blood may back up into other areas of the body: With heart failure, many organs don't receive enough oxygen and nutrients, which damages them and reduces their ability to function properly. Most areas of the body can be affected when both sides of the heart fail.
