Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. The virus can affect the mouth, the genital area, the skin around the anus and the fingers. Once the first outbreak of herpes is over, the virus hides away in the nerve fibres, where it remains totally undetected and causes no symptoms. However, in some people, genital herpes may come back (recur) on the skin surface, at or near the place where it was caught. This may be when the person is ill or run down. Some people never get another outbreak. Types of the virus There are two types of the genital herpes virus. Either type is infectious, but: Type I infects the mouth or nose. It is more likely to recur than if Type II infects this area. Type II infects the genital and anal area, it is more likely to recur than if Type I infects this area.

It is estimated that there are between 500,000 to 1 million cases per year. Lesions: Condylomata acuminata are dry, friable ("cauliflower-like") lesions that occur in the perineal area, glans penis, perianal area, vulva, urethral area and intra-urethral area. The lesions may be fulminating and rapidly growing. Clinical manifestations: In men with intra-urethral warts the chief complaint may be the spraying of urine. Upon intra-urethral inspection, a genital wart that causes turbulence in the urinary flow can be found. It is important to distinguish between the lesions of condylomata acuminatum and those of condylomata latum seen in secondary syphilis. Treatment: Podophyllum may be applied topically to remove smaller lesions. As many as one million cases of genital warts are diagnosed each year. HPV is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 60 different types. Certain types of HPV cause warts on the hands or feet, while others can cause visible genital warts. However, sometimes HPV infection causes no warts, and many people with genital HPV do not know they have it. Genital warts are growths or bumps that appear on the vulva, in or around the vagina or anus, on the cervix, and on the penis, scrotum, groin, or thigh. They may be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large. Some cluster together forming a cauliflower-like shape. Human papillomavirus is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted, and they can infect the genital area of men and women including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), or anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix, or rectum. Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and will clear the infection on their own. Some of these viruses are called high-risk types, and may cause abnormal Pap tests. They may also lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. Others are called low-risk types, and they may cause mild Pap test abnormalities or genital warts. Genital warts are single or multiple growths or bumps that appear in the genital area, and sometimes are cauliflower shaped. Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV. At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. About 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year.

They are caused by viruses similar to those that cause warts on hands or feet. These viruses all belong to the family called human papilloma viruses (HPV). This large family has more than 100 different members, which prefer different types of skin. For example, warts that grow on hands or feet are unlikely to grow on genital skin. About 30 types of HPV prefer the genital area and may infect the skin or lining of the vulva, vagina, cervix, anus, penis and occasionally the mouth. A few of these types can cause the lumps known as genital warts. Many other types never cause visible warts and can only be detected on a Pap smear, or by special microscope or laboratory tests. How do you get genital warts? The HPV virus is usually passed on during sexual activity. This may be through direct skin contact, or the virus may be carried in body fluids from the genital skin of one person to the genital skin of another. If the skin is broken it is more likely that an infection will start. Once a person is infected with HPV, small lumps may appear on the skin after a few weeks. Sometimes the virus may just remain in the skin and be invisible (this is called sub-clinical infection). It is often impossible to tell how long someone may have had the virus, or when they first caught it.

He received treatment in the office on two visits, consisting of some sort of burning to the small rash-like warts, and was given some cream to take home to put on several times a week. This cream also caused a burning sensation, but he appeared to be cleared within 3 weeks. His MD strongly suggested that I needed to be seen by a GYN to be scoped and RNA tested. I was seen by my GYN who told me I was negative and that no further visits were necessary. There seems to be a great discrepancy between the information provided to both of us by our respective physicians. Due to the outstanding reputation, recognition and prominence of his physician, he is inclined to only accept his information and suggestions. My GYN strongly rejects the Beverly Hills dermatologist's opinion that the genital warts received by my boyfriend were contracted through handshaking with one of his friends and that any recurrences are extremely rare. Please assist me in determining the most reliable information currently available on this subject. A: Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are usually sexually transmitted. What gets confusing is that there are over 30 types of HPV, some like types 1, 2, and 3 which cause warts on fingers, type 4 which likes the bottom of the feet, and types 6 and 11 which are the genital ones.
