Extractions: PRISCILLA MOREIRA SODRÉ Endometriosis is a disorder in which abnormal growths of tissue ,histologically resembling the endometrium, are present locations other than the uterine lining..Although endometriosis can occour very rarely in postmenopausal women,it is found almost exclusively in women of reproductive age. All other manifestations of endometriosis exhibit a wide spectrum of expression. The lesions are usually fond on the peritoneal surfaces of the reproductive organs and adjacent structures of the pelvis, but they can occur any where in the body. The size of the individual lesions variesfrom microscopic to large invasive masses that erode into underlying organs and cause extensive adhesion formation. In the uterineendometriosis the lesion is in the miometrium which is invaded by endometrium from within, this condition is generally called adenomiosis. The cause of endometriosis is unknown.Several theories have been offered to explain its occurrence, but none have sactisfactorily explained all of the features of the disease. Atheory of retrograde menstruation was proposed during the 1920s. It was postulated that endometrioses occurred because viable fragments of endometrium were shed at the time of menstruation and passed through the uterine tubes, the tissuebecame implanted on peritoneal surfaces and grew into endometriotic lesions. This theory is simple and atractive but it does not explain why all women do not develop endometriosis or the rare cases of endometriosis in the lung ,brain,or other soft tissues or in nonmentruating subjects (S. Turneror absent uteri).

Medical Encyclopedia Go To Main Page Definition Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrium) grows in other areas of the body, causing pain, irregular bleeding , and frequently infertility The tissue growth typically occurs in the pelvic area, outside of the uterus, on the ovaries, bowel, rectum, bladder, and the delicate lining of the pelvis, but it can occur in other areas of the body as well. Abnormal Menstrual Periods The cause of endometriosis is unknown. However, a number of theories have been proposed. The retrograde-menstruation theory proposes that endometrial cells (loosened during menstruation) may "back up" through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis, where they implant and grow in the pelvic and/or abdominal cavities.

Extractions: African-American Non-sexually active female Endometriosis is commonly diagnosed in at least 15% of all women of reproductive age. Additionally, of women who experience infertility or dysmenorrhea, this disease is a factor in half. Yet, the origin and management of endometriosis remains controversial and frustrating. As a pain syndrome, misconceptions are continually being challenged. A number of theories have been proposed to explain the development of endometriosis. Among the most common are: *Retrograde passage of endometrial tissue through the fallopian tubes with implantation on pelvic organs. Regurgitation of menstrual tissue can explain the predominance of endometriotic lesion in the cul-de-sac, the uterosacrals, and ovaries. *Lymphatic or hematological spread of endometrial tissue to parts of the body distant from the uterus.

DoctorYourself.com - Endometriosis endometriosis may be caused by selenium, folate or vitamin E deficiencies.Nutritional correction can be the answer. endometriosis. http://www.doctoryourself.com/endometriosis.html
Extractions: In cattle, endometriosis can be due to selenium deficiency. Since your cow can't give you any milk without having a baby first, dairymen well know to supplement all cows' feed with selenium. This is usually accomplished with a multimineral tablet the size of a microwave oven. Okay, it's a mineral-fortified salt block (after all, salt IS a mineral...) that can cows lick anytime they want. Human females should do as well, but they don't. We go out of our way to supply selenium to cattle, particularily in geographical regions that have selenium-poor soil (New York state is just one of these). Farmers simply must have healthy, fertile, easy-to-conceive, happily-pregnant, uncomplicated-delivering Bossys by the herd. The economics are obvious: farmer's cannot afford otherwise; a herd with endometriosis would be banckrupcy on the hoof. Women with endometriosis, on the other hand, mean economic success for all the many, many systems we have to capitalize on their sickness. Doctors, nurses, support staff, surgeons, hospitals, administrators, HMO's, insurance companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, drug salespeople, and lots of others' jobs depend on people being unwell. The uterus has always been irresistable to money-medicine, and, with an estimated half a million unnecessary hysterectomies annually, I would say that little has changed. The secret to endometriosis is to see it for what it is: an end result of malunutrition.
Antidote For Endometriosis Elizabeth Smith, MD reviews the most recent clinical and scientific research on the cause of endometriosis and John Lee, MD's success in treating it. http://www.endo101.com/
Extractions: A True Help for Endometriosis Mainstream physicians readily acknowledge that pregnancy retards endometriosis and in some cases cures endometriosis. Mainstream medicine also acknowledges that menopause cures endometriosis. Now, the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) has approved Natural Progesterone for endometrial (uterine lining) hyperplasia (proliferation). Many mainstream physicians are now using natural progesterone to fool the body into thinking it is pregnant ("pseudopregnancy") and stop endometriosis. Endometriosis is simply uterus innner lining (endometrium) that has ended up where it should not be. The endometrial cells (uterine inner lining) end up in the abdominal cavity next to the intestines, fallopian tubes, or on the ovary, and cycle through a menstrual period there causing endometriosis. What is it about pregnancy that cures endometriosis? There are three types of estrogen that the body produces: estradiol, estrone, and estriol. Estradiol produced during a normal menstrual cycle goes into the cell receptor and stimulates the cell receptor strongly stimulating endometriosis to grow. However, estrone and estriol go into the same receptor and stimulates it weakly blocking out estradiol (estradiol stimulates the endometriosis to grow). During pregnancy, the fetus produces precursors to estriol in the fetuse's adrenal glands. Then, the placenta produces estriol several orders of magnitude greater than the non-pregnant state. Progesterone is also produced by the placenta during pregnancy. "Pro" means "for" and gesterone means "gestation". During regular menstrual cycles, a woman produces 20 mg per day of progesterone. However, during the peak of pregnancy the woman's body produces 400 mg per day of progesterone.

Extractions: "Pain is the most common sypmtom of endometriosis and the reason most suffers go to their doctors. However, the extent of the pain doesn't seem to be dependent on how much endometriosis you have, but rather on where it is. For instance, a small number of cysts in an area that is disturbed during intercourse may be much more painful than a large number of elsewhere. Most sufferers also report that their pain seems to get worse during their period, although many other sufferers also report constant pain. Generally, however, if the pain comes and goes during your menstrual cycle, it's highly suggestive of endometriosis.

Extractions: 2002 review of links between endometriosis and dioxin Endometriosis is a puzzling and sometimes debilitating disease that affects millions of women around the world Women suffering from endometriosis experience a variety of symptoms, with lower abdominal pain being most common. Pain can be especially intense before and during menstrual periods. Some women experience pain throughout the menstrual cycle; some during sex. The disease forces more than 100,000 hysterectomies each year in the United States alone, and the costs of the disease exceed $1 billion annually. Particularly troubling is the fact that it is showing up more than ever before in very young women. Given the poor quality of data, however, it is difficult to document long term trends or determine the precise number of women afflicted with the disease. Many cases go unreported and accurate, confirmed diagnosis requires an invasive surgical procedure. Nonetheless, specialists in the field believe that the prevalence of the disease has increased greatly since World War II. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development estimates that endometriosis afflicts 10 to 20 percent of women of childbearing age in the U.S.

Patient Information: Endometriosis Patient Information endometriosis. Although a gynecologist may be suspiciousthat a patient has endometriosis surgery is required for diagnosis. http://www.sls.org/patientinfo/endometriosis.html
Extractions: Endometriosis is a painful condition in which tissue somewhat resembling the lining of the uterus is found in other places in the body, usually in the pelvis. The misplaced cells form growths that can respond to ovarian hormones by producing secretions which can cause inflammation and sometimes bleeding. The results can be pain, infertility, scar tissue formation, and bowel problems. Common symptoms include pain during the menstrual flow, pain away from the menstrual flow, pain with intercourse or tampon insertion, and painful bowel movements. The pain can be sharp, stinging, burning or knifelike. Less common symptoms can include fatigue, pain with urination, and irritable bowel symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Although a gynecologist may be suspicious that a patient has endometriosis surgery is required for diagnosis. Endometriosis is the most common cause of pelvic pain, but it is not the only cause. Even with no endometriosis in the pelvis, the uterus can still cramp severely, or the ovaries can still be painful from cysts or ovulation.
