Extractions: Sitemap Written by Dagmar My experience with emetophobia, and the road towards recovery... It seems I have been afraid of vomiting as long as I live, other people doing it as well as myself. My little sister always got carsick and that terrified me, I hated going away for the weekend or anywhere else. The experience which probably fixed the phobia for good was a salmonella infection from an easter egg when I was 8. The whole family was so sick that we had to call a doctor. After that, I remember always avoiding any situation at school and outside where I could come in contact with a) spoiled food and b) people who could be sick (busses, parties ). But for many years the fear actually was on the "back burner", even during several years where I was very sick with Crohn's disease which affects the gastro-intestinal tract, but I never vomited from it. A new highlight was another food poisoning in 1995 which started two years of absolute panic and terror. I only got better after a theraphy with Paxil (60mg/day for several months..). Slowly I recovered enough to go outside again and do "normal" things. In 1999 I stopped taking meds because I felt that they altered who I was, making me much more relaxed but also indifferent towards others and their needs and feelings.

You are not the only one to suffer from emetophobia. Most sufferers are surprised to learn that they are far from alone in this surprisingly common, although often unspoken, phobia. Emetophobia is an intense fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. While adults with emetophobia realize that these fears are irrational, they often find that facing, or even thinking about facing, the feared situation brings on a panic attack or severe anxiety. There is a Way Out Imagine what your life will be like when you know that you are not "defective". When you can be confident and at ease in situations where you used to feel your emetophobia. And when you can talk about your former emetophobia symptoms as though you are describing a movie where the character is someone else, not you.

Extractions: Let's knock this vicious cycle and inappropriate anxiety on the head once and for all! Many anxiety and panic attack sufferers have a fear of vommiting. This is due partly, to an anxiety reaction created by experiencing vommiting and partly to the production of nausea due to the anxiety that this phobia produces. Do you see how this cycle of fear producing nausea producing fear can spiral out of control? Most anxiety sufferers with this inappropriate fear of vommiting (emetphobia) don't actually throw up, they just feel like they might. This is a horrible sensation and most anxiety disorder sufferers have been there. BUT it is an anxiety disorder, not a seperate condition! ALL PHOBIAS ARE SYMPTOMS OF AN ANXIETY DISORDER ... because, if you weren't frightened, you wouldn't have the phobia and you

Zgourides, Joseph Himle, and Nancy L. Pickering Amazon base price: Buy one from zShops for: Average review score: Confidence returning slowly. Steven Soifer's book was easily the best present I have ever received from my immediate family. A series of acutely embarrassing events in my childhood left me unable to comfortably urinate in public lavatories, friend's homes, or even if my girlfriend was in my apartment. In the worst patch I was unable to urinate unless the TV was on and I could smell freshly cooked ham or bacon. When I could "let go" it was usually only a painful, burning dribble which could last for hours. After unsuccessful treatment with psychiatric drugs I led a reclusive life of almost permanent urinary distress. Mr Soifer's well-written (though disappointly illustrated) book allowed me to work through my "bashful bladder" and helped turn my family's scorn and embarrassment into pity. Highly recommended.
