Abdominal muscle deficiency anomalad, abdominal muscle deficiency syndrome, abdominal musculature aplasia syndrome, abdominal wall aplasia syndrome, absence of abdominal muscle syndrome, aplastic abdominal muscle syndrome, defective abdominal wall syndrome, prune-belly-sequenz, prune belly syndrome. A syndrome combining malformation of the urogenital tract with aplasia of the abdominal musculature. There is a congenital absence of muscles of the anterior abdominal wall, and the lax excessive skin of the abdomen looks like the wrinkled skin of a prune. Other features include persistent furrowlike umbilicus, cryptorchism; and other anomalies, including malrotation of the bowel, pigeon breast, hip dislocation, polydactyly, and heart defects. The male/female rate is 2: 2. The aetiology is unknown. Affected girls show only absence of abdominal muscles. About 20% are stillborn or die within first 4 weeks of life; 50% die within 2 years. Diagnosis can be made in utero by ultrasound by 21 weeks gestation. It can occur sporadically, as an X-linked transmission, associated with chromosomal abnormalities, and as a familial occurrence and is then associated with congenital deafness and mental retardation.

Extractions: (advertisement) Synonyms, Key Words, and Related Terms: PBS, Eagle-Barrett syndrome, triad syndrome Treatment of the child with prune belly syndrome (PBS) has posed a significant amount of difficulty for pediatric urologists. Some authors call for conservative management of the urinary tract in boys with prune belly syndrome, while others advocate an aggressive approach, operating on patients aged 10 days. No definitive timing for therapy has been substantiated. Pediatric urologists have observed that PBS can present with a spectrum of abnormalities, ranging from an infant that is stillborn and has severe urogenital and pulmonary problems to a child with few, if any, urological abnormalities who requires no therapy other than orchidopexies to correct the undescended testes. The decision to aggressively treat the urinary tract of these children should be based on the clinical presentation and not solely on radiographic appearance. Problem: Children with PBS can present with myriad renal, ureteral, and urethral abnormalities. Obstruction and/or upper urinary tract dilatation is not unusual in these children. Occasionally, the site of obstruction can vary from as high up as the pelviureteral junction to as far down as the prostatic membranous urethra.

Extractions: an abnormal, expanded bladder and problems in the upper urinary tract, which may include the bladder, ureters, and kidneys Because of the substantial involvement of the urinary tract, children with prune belly syndrome are usually unable to completely empty their bladders and have serious bladder, ureter, and kidney impairment. A child with prune belly syndrome may also have other birth defects. Most commonly, these defects involve the skeletal system, intestines, and heart. Girls may have defects in their external genitalia, as well. Some infants who have prune belly syndrome may be stillborn or die within a few months of birth. What causes prune belly syndrome?

Prune Belly Syndrome Network Definition Also known as eaglebarrett syndrome, the Prune Belly syndromeconsists of a triad of features Anterior abdominal wall http://www.prunebelly.org/prune2.html
Extractions: About Prune Belly ... Links Also known as Eagle-Barrett syndrome, the Prune Belly syndrome consists of a triad of features: Anterior abdominal wall: musculature is deficient or absent. Urinary tract anomalies (mega-ureters, large bladder). Bilateral cryptorchidism (undescended testicles). The incidence of prune belly syndrome is 1 in 40,000 live births; 95% of cases occur in males. In the past, it was suggested that the abdominal wall was deformed by pressure from a distended bladder due to bladder outlet obstruction in utero. Currently it is thought that prune belly syndrome is a multisystem disease complex which derives from a primary defect in mesodermal development. The major prognostic factor is the degree of dilation of the urinary tract; 20% of patients are stillborn, 30% die of renal failure or urosepsis within the first two years of life, and the remaining 50% have varying degrees of urinary pathology. Renal abnormalities vary widely. There may be agenesis or hypoplasia, which is rare, or hydronephrosis. On IVP, 80% of patients have evident tortuous ureters with dilatation distally. Vesicoureteral reflux is common. The bladder is generally dilated, and the trabecula are thinned. A patent urachus may allow the bladder to decompress.
