Extractions: Patients with DRS have intermittent binocular stimulation and reduced stereoacuity. To test the possibility that Duanes patients have reduced numbers of binocular neuroens we tested their monocular and binocular contrast sensitivity in comparison with matched controls. Paradoxically, we found increased levels of summation in the Duanes patients. We believe that this was due to decreased monocular sensitivity, particularly in the deviating eye, combined with normal binocular sensitivity. Ithese findings were reported at ARVO 2000 and have been submitted for publication to IOVS. Another interesting aspect of our findings is that Duanes patients showed a specific loss of contrast sensitivity at high spatial frequencies (> 10 cpd). We wonder whether normal binocular development is needed for high-spatial frequency channels. Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Applied Vision Research Centre.

Please check the synonyms listing to find the alternate name(s) and disorder subdivision(s) covered by this report. Information on the following diseases can be found in the Related Disorders section of this report: Duane syndrome (DS) is an eye movement disorder present at birth (congenital) characterized by a limited ability to move the eye inward toward the nose (adduction), outward toward the ear (abduction), or in both directions. In addition, when the affected eye(s) moves inward toward the nose, the eyeball retracts (pulls in) and the eye opening (palpebral fissure) narrows. In some cases, when the eye attempts to look inward, it moves upward (upshoot) or downward (downshoot). Duane syndrome falls under the larger heading of strabismus (misalignment of the eyes) under the subclassification of incomitant strabismus (misalignment of the eyes that varies with gaze directions) and subheading of extraocular fibrosis syndromes (conditions associated with fibrosis of the muscles that move the eyes). Although the "muscle fibrosis" association suggests that syndromes under this heading are primary disorders of muscle, evidence suggests that DS (and other syndromes under this heading) may be primary disorders of nerve "innervation" (the distribution or supply of nerves).

A partial manifestation of Stilling-Türk-Duane syndrome, referred to as a separate entity by one author only. This syndrome relates to a fibrous degeneration of the external rectus muscle with limitation of abduction of the affected eye beyond the mid-line and retraction of the bulb upon adduction. This limitation of muscular function is one of the component of Duane's retraction syndrome; hence, Türk's syndrome is regarded as an incomplete form of the latter. A birth injury has been suggested as one of the more likely causes.

Extractions: Kitchen: Oneida Satin Sand Dune 53-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware, Service for 8 - I got this set for $49.99 [In fact I got this set + oneida 20 piece set i.e. set for 12 for $63 shipped]. Same week a 93 piece set (for 12) went on sale in Cost-co for 69.99+tax (Original 79.99). I bought that one too so that I can compare when I get the Oneida set. After comparing apples to apples, I can confidently say that this is a great starter set but not even close to the one i purchased from cost-co. Quality and finish are nice. I like the dune finish which is sort of dull chrome. Some pieces are showing dot of rust here and there (though its all stainless).
