Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top In most cases, Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome 21. It is the most common single cause of human birth defects, with an occurence in 1 out of every 660 births. Children with Down syndrome have a widely recognized characteristic appearance. The head may be smaller than normal (microcephaly) and abnormally shaped. Prominent facial features include a flattened nose, protruding tongue, and upward slanting eyes. The inner corner of the eyes may have a rounded fold of skin (epicanthal fold) rather than coming to a point. The hands are short and broad with short fingers and often have a single crease in the palm (simian crease). Retardation of normal growth and development is typical and most affected children never reach average adult height.

If you would like to read more about growth charts as they relate to Down syndrome, you may want to check out Woodbine House, 1995. Suppose we sample 100 children with DS (all the same age) and arrange them according to ascending height. We can find the 10th percentile by plotting child number 10, and the 90th percentile would be the height of child number 90. If you plot your child's data, and he or she is shown as being in the 50th percentile, you could assume if we lined up 100 children your child's age, that 49 would be shorter and 50 taller than he or she.

Read on to learn all about one of the most frequently encountered chromosomal abnormalities, occurring in one of approximately every 800 to 1,000 live births. Causes The most common cause of Down syndrome occurs when an infant is born with three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome (known medically as trisomy 21). Normally there are 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), half of which are inherited from each parent. Children with Down syndrome, however, have cells that usually contain not 46, but 47 chromosomes, the extra one being a third chromosome 21. It is this extra genetic material in infants with Down syndrome that disrupts their physical and cognitive development. Why Down syndrome occurs is a mystery. It can happen to anyone. Scientists do know that women ages 35 and older have a significantly increased risk of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome. A 35-year-old woman has a one in 350 chance of conceiving a child with Down syndrome; by age 40 this jumps to about one in 100. By age 45 the odds are one in 30. However, because younger women give birth more often, most babies with Down syndrome are still born to younger mothers. According to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), more than 250,000 people in the United States alone are affected.
