I was 13 at the time and had spent the summer in severe pain. My intestines had swollen shut and I was totally dehydrated when I went into the hospital. Before I was diagnosed, the doctors gave me Zantac for an "ulcer", and one doctor thought that I was starving myself! I would sleep a lot more than usual and I didn't want to do anything. The worst part was that nobody knew what was wrong with me. Did I have some new, unheard of disease? Not even TV would leave me alone; I'd click around the cable and be greeted with: "How can I be dying of a disease no one's ever heard of?" from a soap opera. How depressing! When I was diagnosed, I had the usual selection of tests done, like the oh so fun Upper GI! To this day barium makes me gag. What was worse was the next day the doctor started me on vanilla Ensure, which is just too much like barium. Days later, I was released from the hospital with a disease I'd never heard of in my life and a lactose-free diet. I was to take six Asacol per day.

They cause life impairing symptoms, necessitate long-term dependence on powerful drugs, and often result in debilitating surgery and even death. Tens of thousands of Americans are affected. Both diseases are classified under the medical rubric of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The incidence of IBD has risen with the tide of civilization. Once thought of as a psychosomatic illness arising in individuals with "passive personalities with a tendency to suppress personal conflicts," the cause of IBD remains elusive. One theory holds that modern measles virus, improperly cleared from the body, results in low grade, chronic inflammation of the intestinal lymphoid tissue; other hypotheses posit a relationship to contemporary diet. Indeed intake of sugar and "junk food" has been correlated in many studies with susceptibility to both forms of IBD. Some researches have even suggested that the abrasive "polishers" found in modern toothpastes set up inflammatory reactions in the gut. A higher incidence of IBD has even been reported after tonsillectomy. Oral contraceptive users also have an increased risk. The most common early symptoms of ulcerative colitis are constipation with passage of blood or mucus in the stools. The patient may have the urge to defecate with only a scanty bowel movement. Several months or years may pass before diarrhea develops with abdominal pain. The patient may then develop severe fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, fever and occasionally painful joints.

For those of you out there who don't really know what it is, here's the rundown for you. Crohn's Disease, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), is a disease of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It predominates in the lower part of the small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon), but may occur in any section of the GI tract. Crohn's usually causes diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, fever, and at times, rectal bleeding. Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss may also occur. Symptoms may range from mild to severe, but people with the disease can live active and productive lives. Crohn's Disease is chronic and the cause is unknown. Medication currently available decreases inflammation and usually will control symptoms, but does not provide a cure. It has been estimated that as many as 2 million Americans have IBD. Chronic means that the disease returns over and over again with varying periods of remission (freedom from symptoms) between bouts of the disease. Crohn's disease can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract from its beginning (the mouth) to its end (the anus) - including the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. It most commonly affects the end of the small bowel, just before it connects to the large intestine. It can occur at any age, but most commonly affects teens and young adults. The cause of Crohn's disease is not clearly understood at the present time. Signs of Crohn's disease include: Diagnosis The diagnosis of Crohn's disease involves a complete medical evaluation. Testing may include stool samples, x-rays (with or without barium), examination of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract with a scope and, sometimes, a biopsy of tissue. Treatment Once the diagnosis of Crohn's disease has been made, treatment is directed at reducing inflammation, controlling symptoms and preventing complications such as bowel obstruction, malnutrition and the development of fistulas and abscesses. Anti-inflammatory medications such as steroids are often used in the treatment of Crohn's. Hospitalization may be required during serious flare-ups so that intravenous nutrition and medication can be given. Some people find that they can lessen their symptoms by eliminating those foods that seem to make symptoms worse. If, however, you find it difficult to eat a balanced diet because of food intolerances, it is recommended that you consult a registered dietitian to establish a meal plan that will provide you with all of the nutrients you need for health.
