For now I have won, but the outcome was, for a long time, uncertain. I had lived with depression before, when I was only seven, but I did not remember what it was like. So, when I was 12 and started feeling "in a rut" I thought nothing of it. I did not realize that the gradual slide into a nightmare would continue slowly as days passed. It was late October and as the seasons were changing, I began to feel worse and worse. I thought maybe there wasn't enough daylight, or maybe I had a genetic disorder. Whatever the reason, I knew I was slowly losing control of my life. By December, I was withdrawing from my friends, school, even my own family. Over time, a simple bad day turned into a string of unbearable nightmares, an intolerable existence in an empty void. Despite these warning signs, I still took no steps to stop it. I held on to the belief that it was a natural part of growing up, and it would get better if just given time. By March, everyone in my family knew something was wrong with me. We decided I should see a psychiatrist and find out if medication might help. The psychiatrist diagnosed my depression and prescribed an antidepressant to make me feel better. We also made a decision that seemed even more important to me; we got a dog.

It's well recognized now that suicide, usually a result of depression whether diagnosed or not, is on the increase among teens. But thoughts or wishes of death, and self-destructive behavior (often misinterpreted by adults as risky or dangerous play) are increasingly reported by young children. The idea that a child might think of taking his or her own life is horrifying and repugnant. And while we may be able to entertain the idea in theory, in real life when we run across such a child, perhaps in our own family, our denial kicks in.

They may be quiet or become agitated, irritable, and angry; they may also look sad and talk about their sadness. Young children, on the other hand, tend to exhibit non-verbal clues and express their emotional struggles more by their behavior than by talking. A major depression typically lasts several weeks and may be intense. BIPOLAR KIDS After nine years of on-and-off therapy, Carol recalls, her new therapist first brought up the prospect of bipolar regarding her son Chris, then 11. But the first psychiatrist she went to said Chris was OCD while the second maintained he was PTSD. Treatment with an anti-anxiety agent followed, then an anti-psychotic, then another, with her son growing increasingly more violent and out of control. Desperate and with her self-confidence running on empty, Carol consented to an anti-depressant, which amounted to Mr Hyde, Jr. in pill form. "Among other lovely things," Carol recounts, "my son chased me with a baseball bat and a letter opener trying to kill me. I had to physically restrain him for up to six hours a day, usually by myself since my hubby had to work to pay for all the doctor's visits. My younger son had to witness all this mess, and the fear of someone being injured was intense."

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 5-15 year olds.
