    Extractions: Normally the cervix has stopped growing by puberty, but it's cells will continue to divide to replace those that die of injury or old age. While some division of cervical cells to replace old or injured ones is normal, it is a tightly controlled process. Sometimes a abnormal cell may arise which divides out of control. This will then form a tumor . A tumor is simply a swelling, and does not necessarily mean cancer (obviously most swellings are not cancerous). If a tumor only grows in it's local area, it is called "benign" and is not cancer. If, however, it has the capability to spread to other areas of the body, then it is called "malignant" and is cancer. Cervical cancer starts in just one single cell , but this cell quickly divides to form many similar cancer cells, which each continue to grow. Eventually, if not cured, these cells push the normal cells out of the way, grow a large tumor, and spread to other body areas to ultimately kill the patient. The acoustic transducer is a high frequency (30 MHZ) wide band single element PVDF transducer. Pulse-echo traces are recorded at up to 2048 angular positions at a speed of 16 revolutions per second. The high frequency signals are continuously digitized at 200 Msamples/s with a resolution of 10 bits. A processing unit converts the data into a high resolution 'radial' image in real-time and stores the digitized RF-data for further processing. The scanner supports two modi, a real-time search mode and an off-line characterization mode. The first mode is to obtain a basic impression of the cervix. After selection of a region of interest, the second mode uses seismic processing tools for image enhancement and tissue characterization. In this mode use is being made of residual focussing to obtain a high depth-independent resolution and the resulting high resolution image is analyzed by linear Radon transformation for angle dependent information.

    Extractions: In 1997 the American Social Health Association entered into a five-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC ) and Prevention to develop a national model to increase Pap-testing and follow-up among low-income African American and Hispanic women. We identified the communities of Durham and Chatham Counties in North Carolina as pilot sites for developing a replicable model for reaching under-served women in both urban and rural settings. We hope that the project will serve as a model for replication for other local and national organizations. Project objectives included: assessing patient's and provider's knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding the prevention, detection and control of cervical cancer; and, identifying cultural and communication barriers to timely and adequate gynecological health care. By increasing awareness about sexual health issues and cervical cancer prevention the project also sought to increase Pap-testing and follow-up among high-risk women in the pilot geographic areas. Another objective was to improve the quality of health care provider counseling and education surrounding the prevention of cervical cancer and the psychological issues related to diagnosis and treatment.
