A lumbar disk herniation usually causes leg pain (sciatica or a radiculopathy) and is often referred to as a pinched nerve, bulging disk, ruptured disk, or a slipped disk. The treatment will largely depend on the length of time the patient has had his or her symptoms and the severity of the pain. Generally, patients will be advised to start with 6 to 12 weeks of conservative treatment (such as physical therapy).

Extractions: more options Bulging disk/now herniated disk Q: 1 1/2 years ago I had a CT scan that should I had a Bulging disk in L5. The treatment was a series of epidural blocks which did releive my pain. Now, 1 1/2 years later I have had major back pain again, and have been treated by my Chiropractor, who refered me to my MD because she suspected a disk problem. I had an MRI done which shows I now have a Herniated Disk in L5S1. 2 questions: What is the difference, if any, between a Bulging disk, and a Herniated Disk? Should epidoral blocks take care of the pain again? I am only 31 years old, I enjoy many sports and activities. I have a major problem with having to deal with this pain, or the fear if I do anything wrong it will come back, for the rest of my life-what are your thoughts on my options? Brenda A: Herniated disc is a general terms. Within this caterogy, there are four specific terms which describe the anatomy of the herniated disc: bulging, prolapsed, extruded, and sequestered. Bulging Disk Not Always Serious Health Encyclopedia. bulging disk Not Always Serious A diagnosis of degenerative or bulging disk is like finding gray hair it's a sign that you're not getting any younger http://www.personalmd.com/news/a1997012803.shtml
Extractions: Bulging Disk Not Always Serious NEW YORK, Jan 28 (Reuters) Lower back-pain sufferers shouldn't panic if x-rays reveal bulging or degenerative disks in the spine, according to a California researcher. Unless you plan on becoming an Olympic athlete, the relatively harmless signs of aging shouldn't interfere with daily living. "About 40% of people over 40 have some sign of degenerative or bulging disks, and this almost never causes disabling symptoms or serious disease," stated Dr. Eugene Carragee in a release from Stanford University Medical Center in California. "A diagnosis of degenerative or bulging disk is like finding gray hair it's a sign that you're not getting any younger, but it doesn't say anything at all about your health and how you feel," according to Carragee, an associate professor of functional restoration and chief of Stanford University Medical Center's Spine Center. As people age, the cartilage disks that cushion the vertebrae the bones that make up the spinal column can become more brittle and bulge outwards. If a test determines that back pain is not due to some more serious cause, such as a compressed nerve, a tumor or a rare spinal infection, the pain should diminish over time.

Extractions: Registered: Apr 2003 posted 05-23-2003 02:24 PM I would appreciate if anybody who knows more than me about back problems,,,can help me. I 've had pain in the perineum mostly,,for about 3 years, sometimes the pain is ffelt rectally, sorry for being so descriptive, ofteh times the pain is in the buttocks and upper thighs and back of the uuper legs, but mostly tingling , burning and just pain in perineum, buttock, inner front and back side if thighs. I've been wondering if this pain could be coming from my back or anything else. It all started suddenly 3 years ago,, I was exercising in the gym the same day ..but the pain started about 3 hours later whrn i was home..so dont really know what caused it. Its been really 3 years from hell ,,, Had caudal steroid injection in the sacral area,,ddidnt do much,,,just numbed me for a couple of hours. Had 2 MRIs, nothing too obvious,,just 2 mildly bulging disks,,,says "mild diffuse bulging" at L3-4 and L5-S1. THe doctor doesnt believe too much that this mild bulge could cause me these perineal, scrotum,,rectal and buttock pains,,sometimes upper legs too. I am somewhat desperate.

Extractions: I am 32yrs old. I have had back problems since I was 12. I was recently diagnosed with MRI and other test that I have a bulging disk in my neck, and two others beginning to pucker (as the doctor called it) in my lower back where I also have the presence of scoliosis (diagnosed at 9yrs of age) I was basically told there is nothing I can do outside of surgery (disk decompression) When the disk are irritated, inflamed or what ever is going on, it causes severe numbness in my left arm, the bone seems to be throbbing...and I can hardly hold anything(I am left handed so this is major handicap) Is there anything I can do that would aleviate the discomfort and help to speed up the recovery process?
