Extractions: Bites and stings can be dangerous to your pet due to the venom injected or because your pet is allergic to it. Initial treatment is to apply a special type of bandage - Pressure Immobilization. However most of our pets are bitten on the mouth or around the head and rarely is the bite visible. Pressure immobilization is used for the management of snake bites, spider bites and where allergic reactions are occurring. Apply a crepe or conforming bandage over the bitten area and around the limb. Use pantyhose or other material if no bandage is available.

This reaction is known as an insect venom allergy. The problem is not with an allergy to the insect but with the venom. Back to Top Difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness, labored breathing, weakness, confusion, severe swelling, and feeling of panic. A more severe reaction results in the closing of the airway and/or shock (cyanosis and a drop in blood pressure), producing unconsciousness. Extractions: Encyclopedia Index B Home Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Index B Bites and stings Definition Humans can be injured by the bites or stings of many kinds of animals, including mammals such as dogs, cats, and fellow humans; arthropods such as spiders, bees, and wasps; snakes; and marine animals such as jellyfish and stingrays. Description Mammals DOGS In the United States, where the dog population exceeds 50 million, dogs surpass all other mammals in the number of bites inflicted on humans. However, most dog-bite injuries are minor. A telephone survey of U.S. households conducted in 1994 led researchers to estimate that 3,737,000 dog bites not requiring medical attention occurred in the United States that year, versus 757,000 that did require medical treatment. Studies also show that most dog bites are from pets or other dogs known to the bitten person, that males are more likely than females to be bitten, and that children face a greater risk than adults. Each year, about 10-20 Americans, mostly children under 10 years of age, are killed by dogs. Dog bites result in an estimated 340,000 emergency-room visits annually throughout the United States. More than half of the bites seen by emergency departments occur at home. Children under 10 years old, especially boys between 5 and 9 years of age, are more likely than older people to visit an emergency room for bite treatment. Children under 10 years old were also much more liable to be bitten on the face, neck, and head. Nearly all of the injuries suffered by people seeking treatment in emergency rooms were of "low severity," and most were treated and released without being admitted to hospital or sent to another facility. Many of the bites resulted from people attempting to break up fights between animals.
Extractions: Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed Mechanisms of Injury Children may be at increased risk for severe reactions to stings and envenomations due to an increased dose of venom per kg. There are several mechanisms for the toxic effects of bites and stings: Immunologic, including IgE mediated anaphylaxis and serum sickness (Ab-Ag complex). Hemotoxic Neurotoxic Most venoms are toxic due to a combination of the above factors Purveyors of Venom Snakes Several different types of snakes must be differentiated due to the varying effects of their venoms. Pit Vipers These account for the majority of significant envenomations in the United States. Included are Rattlesnakes (60%) Water moccasins: Copperheads (30%) Cottonmouths (10%) Many rattlesnake bites are provoked and thus involve the upper extremities Pit viper venom is voluntarily injected by venom gland contraction. It generally contains digestive enzymes. Depending on the species there may be other components. The Mojave rattlesnake makes Mojave "toxin", a neurotoxin which may lead to paralysis and respiratory arrest. There may be varying hemotoxins which profoundly decrease platelet and clotting factors. Treatment First Aid Management Initiate BLS as necessary (ABCs) Move the patient to a health care facility as rapidly as possible Minimize movement of an affected extremity and keep the extremity below the level of the heart
Extractions: Items ... pest control In the animal kingdom there are many creatures that can bite or sting humans, pets, livestock or wildlife. Many of these bites or stings can cause pain, death or reactions to our systems that can be mild to extreme. This article cannot cover all scenarios, all bites, all stings delivered by every animal or insect on the planet. It will, however, attempt to describe the different problems encountered by humans and domestic animals that are caused by insects, reptiles and others. Not all insects, reptiles, animals cause pain, sickness, allergic reactions or death. Even of those creatures that have the ability to bite or sting, not all have the ability to puncture human skin. All spiders can deliver toxins but very few can actually deliver these toxins deep enough through human skin to actually cause sickness or death. (See Black Widow Spiders Brown Recluse Spiders Of those that can puncture or cut human skin, most are defending themselves or are looking for a blood meal. Chiggers, mosquitoes, fleas and ticks are examples of those that have mouthparts that enable them to puncture skin for feeding on blood. Horse Flies and Deer flies are examples of insects that have mouthparts that actually cut skin (instead of puncturing) to get to their food, which is blood. Among the creatures discussed will be spiders

Kemp, MD VOL 103 / NO 6 / JUNE 1998 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables This is the first of four articles on summer emergencies Preview : As the cold, wet conditions of winter give way to the pleasant weather of spring and summer, we Homosapiens venture out of our "dens" for increasingly extended periods of the day and night. Many of the creeping and flying creatures we encounter outdoors consider our species to be a source of food or a threat to safety. The result is often bites and stings. Primary care physicians must be able to accurately identify the source of such wounds and treat the victim appropriately. Dr Kemp reviews arthropods commonly seen in the United States, and he discusses management of bites and reactions to them, some of which can be severe. P rimary care physicians may well be patients' most important resource concerning the many arthropods found in this country and the wounds they can inflict. Physicians can assist in easing patients' immediate discomfort, manage serious reactions, and teach prevention. Fortunately, the type of reaction generated by a bite or sting often helps identify the species involved and the typical course that follows. Both of these factors are important in selecting treatment. Wasps, bees, and certain ants use their weapon, a modified ovipositor, to protect themselves and the colony. Most species do so in a somewhat predictable manner, but others (notably, yellow jackets) may attack without apparent provocation. The circumstances, number, and pattern of stings are helpful clues in identifying the species. Of course, an individual insect of any group may sting if injured or threatened. In temperate climates, stings may occur during any warm month, but their numbers peak in August (1).

Extractions: Two potentially life-threatening instances are poisonous spiderbites and particular sensitivity and allergy to bites or stings. In both cases medical advice should be sought. Very young children and the elderly are the most at risk. The only poisonous spiders in New Zealand are the katipo and the closely related Australian red-back spider, which is found in some areas. Antivenom to these spider bites is available at hospitals and health centres. If possible, catch the spider responsible, so that it can be positively identified. There have been no deaths attributed to spider bites in New Zealand for many years.

If you can see the stinger in your child's skin, you should use a dull blade or credit card to scrape it out. Avoid pinching it out, since this can inject more venom into the wound. If your child was stung by a poisonous spider, snake or if he is having an allergic reaction, you should call your doctor or activate your local emergency medical services for further treatment.
