It is written by Professors Hughes, Mansel and Webster, international experts on benign breast disease. At over 300 pages, with extensive illustrations and photographs, it provides details on all types of benign breast disease, including pain, mastalgia, nipple probles, fibroadenomas, cysts and calcification. Most breast complaints are benign in nature. Despite this, most women with breast complaints "assume the worst" when a new problem is discovered. This is understandable, but to help allay these fears, an understanding of the benign breast disorders is needed.
Extractions: Most breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous). All women have lumpy breasts and many lumps that women find are nodular or lumpy are areas of normal breast tissue which can become more prominent and lumpy just before a period. Lumpy breasts used to be called fibrocystic disease or fibroadenosis. It is now realised that lumpy breasts are not diseased breasts but are normal. There are some common causes of lumps: fibroadenomas cysts. Fibroadenomas These lumps are not strictly speaking disease at all but rather a simple overgrowth of the lobules or the leaf of the breast tree. They are most common in women under the age of 30. They move freely within the breast and can be diagnosed by a combination of clinical examination, ultrasound and removing cells by needle aspiration. If a woman has a fibroadenoma, it may not need to be removed. If left alone, at least one in three of these lumps gets smaller or disappears within two years. If she is worried about the lump or it gets bigger, then she can opt to have it removed.

The breast is composed of three types of tissue- fibrous, glandular, and fat. These tissues provide support and contain blood vessels and nerves. The milk glands are referred to as glandular tissue. These glands secrete milk during pregnancy and flow through the milk duct to the nipple. Most of the common benign breast masses develop from the fibrous connective tissue and the glandular tissue.

In fact, if every woman's breast tissue were examined under a microscope, nine out of 10 would have a benign condition. Fibrocystic changes are the most common causes of breast tenderness and lumps. They affect at least half of all women, most often during childbearing age. But women of any age may experience them. And the symptoms are the most pronouced the week before one's menstrual period begins. Why fibrocystic changes happen isn't known for sure. But the hormone estrogen may play a role. Typically, women with fibrocystic changes experience breast tenderness or these kinds of lumps: Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can make your breasts feel tender and sore. The discomfort usually begins just before the menstrual period and improves right afterwards. Cysts occur in about 60 percent of all women, most often between the ages of 35 to 50.

Before your menstrual period begins, and sometimes during your period, you can have some tenderness, pain, or lumps in your breasts. This could be due to the extra fluid that collects in the breast tissue (cyst) as well as changes in the body's hormonal levels. This is normal. But if the lumps do not disappear before your next period, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Any noticeable change, thickening or localized swelling in your breast that was not there before may be a lump. Eighty-five percent of all breast lumps found are benign. Some common benign breast problems that appear as lumps are: Cystic Disease (fibrocystic breast disease) is the most common cause of breast lumps in women. These lumps or cysts are fluid-filled sacs that enlarge and become tender and painful before the menstrual cycle. This condition is responsible for at least half of all breast biopsies performed. Extractions: A cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops in the breast tissue. Such cysts typically occur in women between the ages of 35 and 50 and are most common in those approaching menopause. They often enlarge and become tender and painful just before the menstrual period and may seem to appear overnight. Cysts are rarely malignant and may be caused by a blockage of breast glands. Cysts can feel either soft or hard. When close to the surface of the breast, cysts can feel like a large blister, smooth on the outside, but fluid-filled on the inside. However, when they are deeply imbedded in breast tissue, a cyst will feel like a hard lump because is covered with tissue. How are cysts diagnosed and treated?
FNAC Of Breast Lumps Of the 61 patients who were aspirated with a 21 needle, histological examination revealed 45 breast carcinomas and 16 benign breast lumps. http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/journal/vol43_5/4350008.htm
Extractions: Department of Surgery, Peterborough District Hospital, Thorpe Road, Peterborough, UK A randomized study was performed on patients in whom the clinical decision had already been made to excise a breast lump. The objective was to assess the difference in diagnostic results of 21 and 23 G needles in the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of breast lumps. Following induction of anaesthetic, (local or general), FNAC was performed with either a 21 or 23 G needle. The breast lump was then excised and the histology and cytology results analysed routinely. One hundred and twenty-five excised breast lumps were included. Sixty-one had FNAC performed with a 21 G needle and 64 had FNAC performed with a 23 G needle. Of the 61 21 G FNAC, histology revealed 45 breast cancers. Of the 64 23 G FNAC, 50 patients had breast cancer. There was no statistical difference between these two results. There is no difference in the cytological yield when a 21G needle is compared with that of a 23 G needle. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of breast lumps is an important part of the triple assessment of the palpable breast lump (clinical examination, imaging, [mammography or ultrasound], and FNAC). It has been shown that FNAC can reduce the number of open breast biopsies.
