► Autoimmune Disorders English / Spanish Autoimmune disorders. lacking. Autoimmune disorders develop when the immune system destroys normal body tissues. This http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000816.htm
Extractions: Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The immune system protects the body from potentially harmful substances (antigens) such as microorganisms, toxins cancer cells, and foreign blood or tissues from another person or species. Antigens are destroyed by the immune response , which includes production of antibodies (molecules that attach to the antigen and make it more susceptible to destruction) and sensitized lymphocytes (specialized white blood cells that recognize and destroy particular antigens). Immune system disorders occur when the immune response is inappropriate, excessive, or lacking. Autoimmune disorders develop when the immune system destroys normal body tissues. This is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction similar to allergies , where the immune system reacts to a substance that it normally would ignore. In allergies, the immune system reacts to an external substance that would normally be harmless. With autoimmune disorders, the immune system reacts to normal "self" body tissues. Normally, the immune system is capable of differentiating "self" from "non-self" tissue. Some immune system cells (lymphocytes) become sensitized against "self" tissue cells, but these cells are usually controlled (suppressed) by other lymphocytes. Autoimmune disorders occur when the normal control process is disrupted. They may also occur if normal body tissue is altered so that it is no longer recognized as "self." The mechanisms that cause disrupted control or tissue changes are not known. One theory holds that various microorganisms and drugs may trigger some of these changes, particularly in people with a genetic predisposition to an autoimmune disorder.

Extractions: The immune system is a highly sophisticated defense system that attacks and removes dangerous bacteria, viruses, cancerous cells, and many other undesirable substances and organisms from our body. Sometimes our immune system goes awry and mistakenly attacks our own tissues, resulting in a variety of what we call autoimmune disorders. When the immune system attacks bones and joints, we develop rheumatoid arthritis. When the immune system attacks a variety of our bodys organs, we develop a chronic inflammatory disease known as lupus. Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are closely related conditions. Other autoimmune disorders include chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, two closely related disorders. Irritable bowel syndrome probably has some autoimmune components to it, as well. All of these disorders are complex, so we cannot pinpoint their exact origins. But the latest theories indicate that they all seem to involve defects in the immune system, hence are called autoimmune disorders.
Autoimmune Disorders Autoimmune disorders. Definition Autoimmune disorders are conditions in which a person s immune system attacks the body s own cells, causing tissue destruction. http://www.chclibrary.org/micromed/00039060.html
Extractions: Autoimmunity is accepted as the cause of a wide range of disorders, and it is suspected to be responsible for many more. Autoimmune diseases are classified as either general, in which the autoimmune reaction takes place simultaneously in a number of tissues, or organ specific, in which the autoimmune reaction targets a single organ. Autoimmune disorders include the following: Systemic lupus erythematosus . A general autoimmune disease in which antibodies attack a number of different tissues. The disease recurs periodically and is seen mainly in young and middle-aged women. Rheumatoid arthritis . Occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the tissues that line bone joints and cartilage. The disease occurs throughout the body, although some joints may be more affected than others. Goodpasture's syndrome . Occurs when antibodies are deposited in the membranes of both the lung and kidneys, causing both inflammation of kidney glomerulus (
Extractions: Heart Disease, Cardiovascular and Peripheral Vascular Health An interesting study at Wayne State University in Detroit gave six zinc supplements, 30 mg a day, to 13 elderly zinc deficient men and women. After six months of extra zinc, they found improvements in immune function, increased blood levels of the thymus hormone thymosin, of which zinc is a key ingredient. You cannot make enough mature T-cells without zinc. The Wayne State study found that nearly 30% of a large group of healthy, affluent people over 50 were zinc deficient, according to their article in Nutrition, May/June 1993.
