Extractions: Pain, definite or indefinite swellings or lipomas, weight gain of maybe 50%, fatigue, difficulty in walking. The disease occurs mainly among women and increases with age. In spite of the fact that the disease has been known and described for more than 100 years. http://www.algon.dk/dercum/dercumeng2.php paints a pretty bleak picture with little know about treatment and the disease eventually attacking internal organs. Some believe that Dercum's Syndrome is an umbrella term for a whole host of health problems with unknown cause/cure. My first awareness of this syndrome came from a woman in Alabama who related to symptoms I experienced for many years related in a page on my website. I was lucky in that I had identified the source of my infection and I also lucked out in discovering the value of high dosages of garlic and a diet to control my symptoms. Otherwise, I certainly may have developed the lipomas or "cushion"-like fatty swellings, chronic pain, described as burning or smarting. The pain can be found in all of the subcutaneous fat, but also in the skeleton and joints. The pain can vary regarding strength and localization, but is almost always symmetrical. In almost all cases the patients will become heavy overweight, about 50% above their normal weight. Fatigue is a very important symptom which can arise very suddenly in connection with even slight physical strain and put a stop to any kind of activity. The disease makes it difficult for the patient to walk or stand up for long periods, and can in the long run develop into a real handicap.

It is well known that the amount and distribution of body fat varies with age, sex and race. By contrast, less attention has been paid to certain disorders characterized by abnormal localized forms of excess adipose tissue. Reading a few selected articles related to basic science concepts and general orientation to the subject of adipose tissue will be helpful. **Wells: Adipose tissue, a neglected subject. Article: Fat-cell Heat Production ... In Adiposis Dolorosa This site discusses the symptoms, personal stories and research that has been done in the study of Dercum's Disease (adiposis dolorosa). This is a article discusses the difference between Dercum http://dercum.tripod.com/fat_heat.html
Extractions: al Science SUMMARY 1. Gluteal adipose tissue was examined in 13 patients with generalized adiposis dolorosa, a clinical condition characterized by painful adiposity with a chronic intractable course. The total metabolic activity of fat cells, isolated by collagenase and suspended in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer with glucose and insulin, was assessed by the measurement of heat production at 37°C using microcalorimetry. 2. Fat cells were markedly enlarged; their metabolic activity expressed in terms of/~W/g, but not in pW/cell, was significantly decreased when compared with both lean and weight-matched non-painful subjects. Both mean values were, however, significantly higher than in grossly obese subjects with similar mean cell size. Heat production as expressed per g of tissue, but not per cell, was inversely correlated with body mass index. One additional patient had unilateral disease, and fat cells from the painful side had a lower heat production than cells from the unaffected side. 3. The fatty acid composition of adipose tissue, as determined by g.c., revealed a significantly increased proportion of monounsaturated (18:1 and 16:1) at the expense of saturated (14:0 and 18:0) fatty acids compared with healthy control subjects. The activity of adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase was slightly, but not significantly, decreased.
