Prevention Definition: textLink Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis , which often follows an infectious illness. Alternative Names: Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; Acute idiopathic polyneuritis; Infectious polyneuritis; Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy Causes, incidence, and risk factors: p Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause denervation (kill the axon part of the nerve cell), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.

Please check the synonyms listing to find the alternate name(s) and disorder subdivision(s) covered by this report. Information on the following diseases can be found in the Related Disorders section of this report: Devic disease, also known as neuromyelitis optica, is a rare nerve disorder characterized by optic neuritis occurring in conjunction with transverse myelitis. Optic neuritis is characterized by inflammation and swelling of the nerves in the eyes that transmit impulses from the retinas to the brain (optic nerves). Transverse myelitis is characterized by inflammation and swelling of the nerves in the spinal cord. Most individuals with Devic disease have an initial phase of the disorder consisting of a slight fever, sore throat and/or head cold. Affected individuals may also experience loss of clear vision (acuity), mild paralysis (usually of the lower limbs), and loss of bladder and bowel control. Devic disease may occur spontaneously, or in conjunction with multiple sclerosis or systemic lupus erythematosus.

ALTERNATIVE NAMES Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; acute idiopathic polyneuritis; infectious polyneuritis; acute inflammatory polyneuropathy DESCRIPTION Guillain-Barré (ghee-yan-bah-ray) syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the nervous system, causing a neuromuscular autoimmune disease. It is a disorder involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis, usually following an infectious illness. It is related to inflammation of multiple nerves. In GBS the immune system starts to destroy the myelin sheath that surrounds the axons of many nerve cells, or even the axons themselves (axons are long, thin extensions of the nerve cells that carry nerve signals). This acute autoimmune attack on myelin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is associated with IgM antibodies to myelin glycolipid. The myelin sheath surrounding the axon speeds up the transmission of nerve signals and allows the transmission of signals over long distances. GBS can affect anybody. It can strike at any age, and both sexes are equally prone to the disorder. The syndrome is fairly rare, afflicting only about one person in every 100,000. It is not known why GBS strikes some people and not others. Nor do we know exactly what sets the disease in motion.

Extractions: Plasmaphoresis may decrease the severity of the symptoms and facilitate a more rapid recovery. In this procedure, blood plasma, which contains antibodies , is removed from the body and replaced with intravenous fluids or antibody-free donated plasma. Intravenous immune globulin (IVIg) is equally effective in reducing the severity and duration of the symptoms. Other treatments are directed at preventing complications such as choking during feeding (through positioning or use of a feeding tube), blood clots (through positioning and sometimes blood thinners), intermittent bladder catheterization, and others. Pain is treated aggressively with anti-inflammatory agents and narcotics if needed.
