Extractions: From The Cochrane Library, Issue 2, 2004 Pharmacological interventions for recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in childhood (Cochrane Review) Huertas-Ceballos A, Macarthur C, Logan S ABSTRACT Order full review View and/or submit comments What's new in this issue Search abstracts ... Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 21 November 2001. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Between 4% and 25% of school age children complain of recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) of sufficient severity to interfere with daily activities. For the majority of such children no organic cause for their pain can be found on physical examination or investigation. Although most children are likely managed by reassurance and simple measures, a large range of interventions has been recommended. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of medication for recurrent abdominal pain in school-age children. Search strategy: The Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycLIT, LILACS and JICST were searched using a strategy combining (Recurrent OR synonyms) AND (Abdomen OR synonyms) AND (Pain OR synonyms). Where appropriate search filters were employed. In addition, researchers working in this area were asked to identify relevant studies.

Extractions: What is it? A migraine is much more than a bad headache. A migraine headache is a recurrent, throbbing headache usually felt on one side of the head. Migraines usually begin in early childhood, adolescence, or young adult life. Migraine pain can be excruciating, and may incapacitate you for hours or even days. Migraine headaches may be preceded by a warning sign. Warning signs may include: flashes of light, dizziness or numbness. The signs are often accompanied by severe nausea, vomitting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. What causes it? Migraine headaches are caused by a rapid widening and narrowing of blood vessel walls in the brain and head. This causes the pain fibers in the blood vessel wall to become irritated. Blood vessels in the scalp are often involved. Some of the events that have been reported to causes migraine headaches are: hunger, cheese, changes in weather, nuts, fatigue, avocados, oral contraceptives, chocolate, menstrual periods, food cured with nitrates (e.g., hot dogs), emotional stress, meat tenderizers (e.g., MSG), and alcoholic beverages. It is not known why some individuals have migraines and others do not. What are some common symptoms?
Extractions: Migraine, Abdominal Pain, Sneezing A nine year old boy presented the following problems: Crampy abdominal pain of three months' duration. Recurrent migraine headaches with vomiting. Recurrent sneezing attacks. Rectal itching, with burning discomfort He was breast fed for the first two years of his life, but had many infantile symptoms, including recurring colicky pain. He had intermittent symptoms since then, but appeared to have worsened in the last three months. Mother described a 2 week trial elimination diet - milk and eggs were removed from his diet - which produced some benefit, but many symptoms did not clear. A food diary (on the milk-and-egg-free program) showed intake of grapefruit, orange, toast, honey, peanut butter, apple juice, lemonade, and cookies. He tended to be snacking on these trivial, and also allergenic, foods. His substantial meals were beef portions, potatoes, and a few vegetables. Mother had noted that on high fruit juice and citrus intake, he developed chancre sores in his mouth. He had continued to have headaches almost daily, with intermittent episodes of abdominal pain, which was most disturbing.
