Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen Recklinghausen's disease (neurofibromatosis)
Biography:
Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen
von Recklinghausen wrote one of the early descriptions of haemochromatosis and introduced this term into the medical literature. In 1862, while still Virchow’s assistant, he published two important papers, one showing that connective tissue contained spaces which were drained by lymphatics and in which cells were present. He showed some of these cells had amoeboid movements and identified them as leukocytes. He established the method of using silver to stain the lines of junction of cells and his work led to Julius Friedrich Cohnheim’s (1839-1884) studies on leukocyte migration and inflammation. Cohnheim was a young assistant in the laboratory at the time. von Recklinghausen wrote both in German and Latin. Recklinghausen was widely known for his postgraduate teaching in the dissection room and the laboratory, attracting students from all over the world. Many of them later had great success and achieved high academic status. Still one of Recklinghausen's students in his memories said that his teacher had little contact with his candidates and rarely spoke to them. Recklinghausen was quite a colourful personality and pleasant colleague. He opposed Robert Koch’s concept that the tubercle bacillus was the cause of tuberculosis. He would argue that to say that tuberculous lesions contained Koch’s bacillus and therefore the bacillus was the cause of tuberculosis was like saying that the pyramid-like piles of horse manure (a frequent sight in Strassburg streets before the advent of the motor car) were du to sparrows which perched on top of them.

"While no one person is ever responsible for a major new technology, Daniel von Recklinghausen, Scott's chief engineer, was certainly a major force in the development and popularization of FM radio. von Recklinghausen, unlike his contemporaries, still has designs that are in the forefront of current state-of-the-art audio technology. The EMlT tweeter, which can be found in some of the finest systems in the world was designed by von Recklinghausen. KLH first marketed it as the DVR tweeter.
von Recklinghausen was, and is, a rare breed of audio engineer one who uses his ears and has an open mind. A quote from a Boston Audio Society meeting best illustrates his philosophy:
"If it measures good and sounds bad, it is bad. If it sounds good and measures bad, you've measured the wrong thing."
This is the kind of dedication to sound quality that is only found today among High End manufacturers. For von Recklinghausen the sound of music was the reference."

Neurofibromatosis 1 (von Recklinghausen disease)
  • Introduction Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is a progressive multisystem disorder which affects approximately 1 in 3,000 individuals. NF1 is an autosomal dominant disorder with a high degree of penetrance, widely variable clinical expression, and a high frequency of new mutations, with only half of patients having an affected parent. Affected individuals have a 50% risk of transmitting the disorder to their children. However, parents of a child with a new mutation are not at an increased risk to have another affected child. The gene for NF1 is located on the long arm of chromosome 17 at band q11.2. It codes for a protein, called neurofibromin, which is thought to be a tumor suppresser. A number of point mutations and gene deletions have been identified in affected individuals. Commercial DNA testing for NF1 is offered as a protein truncation test, which does not detect all mutations. Due to controversy regarding the application of this test, the current standard of diagnosis remains clinical. In familial cases, prenatal diagnosis using DNA linkage analysis may be available.
  • Clinical Features The diagnosis of NF1 requires the presence of 2 or more of the National Institutes of Health criteria including:
  • 6 or more cafe-au-lait spots of at least 5 mm. in diameter before puberty and 15 mm. in diameter after puberty;

General Discussion Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF-1), also called von Recklinghausen's Disease, is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple noncancerous (benign) tumors of nerves and skin (neurofibromas) and areas of abnormally decreased or increased coloration (hypo- or hyperpigmentation) of the skin. Areas of abnormal pigmentation typically include pale tan or light brown discolorations (cafe-au-lait spots) on the skin of the trunk and other regions as well as freckling, particularly under the arms (axillary) and in the groin (inguinal) area. Such abnormalities of skin pigmentation are often evident by one year of age and tend to increase in size and number over time.

Friedrich v.

    von Recklinghausen's disease of bone Osteitis fibrosa cystica describes the advanced bony changes seen in patients with primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. It is now rare as hyperparathyroidism is usually discovered and treated at an earlier stage than before. Advancing hyperparathyroidism produces a sequence of bony changes:
    • demineralisation osteitis fibrosa - increased osteoclastic activity with bone resorption and peritrabecular fibrosis osteitis fibrosa cystica is characterised by:
        extensive bone resorption accompanies marrow fibrosis with the development of cysts within the enlarged fibrotic marrow spaces brown tumours
      Skeletal changes are most prominent at the sites of highest bone activity - trabecular bones of vertebrae, phalanges, the ends of long bones, and parts of the skull. Osteitis fibrosa cystica is most common in severe primary hyperparathyroidism. Secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic renal failure usually produces renal osteodystrophy.
