Common Bacterial or Viral Infections Meningitis

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges a membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis can be either bacterial or viral. Bacterial meningitis is usually caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae Neisseria meningitidis , or Haemophilus influenzae . Symptoms of bacterial meningitis can include sudden onset of fever, headache, neck pain or stiffness, painful sensitivity to strong light, vomiting (often without abdominal complaints), and irritability. All of these symptoms may or may not present. This is a disease that can quickly progress to lethargy, unresponsiveness, convulsions, and death. Prompt medical attention is extremely important. Viral meningitis is serious but rarely fatal in people with a normal immune system. The symptoms generally persist for 7-10 days and then there is complete recovery. Sinusitis
This is a bacterial infection that can be caused by a number of different bacteria. It is an infection of one or all of the 4 sinuses hollow cavities that are situated around the nose. A sinus infection occurs when these cavities get filled with pus, which produces an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, instead of staying empty, air-filled cavities. Common symptoms include yellow-green nasal discharge, nasal congestion, facial pain that may extend down into your teeth, fever, cough, and generalized headache and ill feeling. Several antibiotics can be used to treat this infection.

Viral Infections
Viruses are very strange. They are incredibly small-so tiny that while ordinary microscopes can see the body's cells and the bacteria that may infect them, you need much more powerful electron microscopes to see virus particles. Antibiotics are generally useless against viruses; they work most actively against bacteria. Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, mainstream medicine has come up with dozens of antibiotics. But today we still have only a handful of antiviral drugs, among them acyclovir for herpes , AZT for AIDS and interferon, the body's own virus fighter.
Supplements and herbs
The good news is that several herbs used in traditional herbal medicine have scientifically documented antiviral effects.
  • Echinacea (Echinacea, various species). This is by far the most popular antiviral herb, and for good reason. Echinacea fights viruses in two ways. It contains three compounds with specific antiviral activity - caffeic acid, chicoric acid and echinacin. Root extracts of Echinacea have also been shown to act like interferon, the body's own antiviral compound. In addition, Echinacea is an immune stimulant that helps the body defend itself against viral infection more effectively.

Are viral infections most contagious before or after symptoms appear?
05-Nov-1982 Dear Cecil:
My wife and I have been married for five years. She has a mild case of herpes, contracted years before we met and subject to intermittent outbreaks (usually related to stress). But although we take no precautions other than a little restraint occasionally, I have apparently never caught the virus, or at least I have never had an outbreak. Is it really possible that I'm clean? Or could I have herpes and not know it? Or could she not have herpes but something else causing similar manifestations even though it was diagnosed as herpes by two different doctors? Name Withheld, Cave Creek, Arizona Dear Cecil:
Is it true that colds and flu and other germ-spread illnesses are most contagious before you get the symptoms rather than after? I have always written this off as a crackpot theory, but now that I have a small child, I'd really like to know. If it's true, then I don't need to worry about him being around sick people, or infecting his little friends if he himself is sick. Can you find out for sure? R.B., Monroe, Wisconsin Cecil replies:

III. VIRUSES K. TYPES OF VIRAL INFECTIONS LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS SECTION Viruses are infectious agents with both living and nonliving characteristics. 1. Living characteristics of viruses a. They reproduce at a fantastic rate, but only in living host cells. b. They can mutate. 2. Nonliving characteristics of viruses a. They are acellular, that is, they contain no cytoplasm or cellular organelles. b. They carry out no metabolism on their own and must replicate using the host cell's metabolic machinery. In other words, viruses don't grow and divide. Instead, new viral components are synthesized and assembled within the infected host cell. c. They possess DNA or RNA but never both. Viral Infections of Humans Most viruses that infect humans, such as those that cause routine respiratory infections (e.g., cold viruses, influenza viruses) and gastrointestinal infections (e.g., Rotaviruses, Norwalk virus), cause acute infections. Acute (def) infections are of relatively short duration with rapid recovery.
