PURPOSE Two characteristics shape the response of a motoneuron to a descending input: one is probabilistic, ascribed to its own physical and electrophysiological properties; the other is deterministic, ascribed to the descending impulses on it. In this work, we set out to study the probabilistic response of the motoneuron to derive a "translation factor" that determines the firing rate response of a given motoneuron to the descending drive. A better understanding of this response should give us insight to the adaptive mechanisms of the nervous system in strokes and other disorders of the corticospinal tract. President's Message Corporate Data Business Strategy In Japan, approximately 150,000 people die of cardio-vascular diosoders (ischemic heart disease) every year (source: The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare survey, 2001). Cardio-vascular disorders are the second most common cause of death in Japan, next to cancers. The number of patients with cardio-vascular disorders has increased in parallel with the rise in the elderly population in Japan. Moreover, medical expenses related to cardio-vascular disorders amounted to over fifty million dollars, while the medical expenses for patients 65 years or older accounted for more than forty million dollars in 1999. Peripheral Vascular Disorders
GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it? Peripheral (per-IF-er-ull) vascular (VASS-q-ler) disorders (PVD's) are conditions that can change blood flow through blood vessels in your body. PVD's do not affect the blood vessels in your heart and brain. Disorders may be in your veins or arteries (R-ter-eez), or both. PVD may also be called peripheral arterial disease, or "PAD". PVD is a life-long condition that may get worse over time without treatment. If you have PVD, you are at a higher risk of having heart problems. Most people with PVD stay the same or get better without having surgery. What are arteries and veins? Veins carry blood (without oxygen) from your body to your heart. Arteries carry blood (with oxygen) from your heart out to your body. Arteries are strong, flexible blood vessels that are able to expand (get bigger) and contract (get smaller). They expand as your heart beats, and contract between heartbeats. Veins are less flexible than arteries. They have valves (doors) that open and close to let blood through. Most PVD's are caused by clogged or weakened arteries or veins, or damaged valves in veins. What are the types of PVD's?

Spinal Manipulative Therapy and Cerebral Vascular Disorders
On a recent visit to the National Library of Medicine, I came across an article published in a refereed Russian journal.1 This article was devoted to the hot topic of chiropractic, and I'm happy to provide an abstract of the published results for the readers of Dynamic Chiropractic. It is accepted in manual medicine that certain cases of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are concurrent with vertebrogenious disorders that can cloud the clinical picture. In this article, special indications for manual therapy in patients exhibiting the stages of cerebral vascular disorders, such as disturbances of neuromuscular functions in the cervical and thoracic locomotor apparatus, were elaborated. Dr. Ezhov studied 100 patients (61 men and 39 women) in the initial stages of cerebral vascular disorders. They ranged in age from 35 to 55, and presented with complaints of headache, dizziness, tingling, fatigue, memory impairment, and sleep disturbances. All patients had neurological complications of dystrophic and degenerative disease based in the cervical and/or thoracic regions. The patients were evaluated using psychological and psychiatric tests, ECG, EEG, reoencephalography (indirect evaluation of cerebral blood circulation using cutaneous electrodes), and blood biochemistry. X-ray findings showed marginal sclerosis of the lamina of vertebral bodies with diminished cervical lordosis and thoracic kyphosis, decreased disc height, and marginal osteophites. The majority of patients presented with posture and gait changes; subluxations were found in C0-C2 (86 percent), C5-C6 (88 percent), C7-T1 (96 percent), T10-L2 (63 percent), and L4-S1 (82 percent), along with multiple trigger points in the temporal, occipital, trapezius, scalenus, and sternoclaidomastoideus muscles.
